Evaluation of the Efficacy and Synergistic Effect of α- and δ-Tocopherol as Natural Antioxidants in the Stabilization of Sunflower Oil and Olive Pomace Oil during Storage Conditions

Abstract: Tocopherols are natural bioactive compounds with several health benefits. This study evaluated the effect of different ratios of α- and δ- tocopherol homologs to protect sunflower oil (SO) and olive pomace oil (OPO) against oxidation. A synergistic effect was recorded when the two tocopherols were combined at a ratio of 7:1 (α-T/δ-T). The oil samples were exposed to accelerated oxidation conditions using a Rancimat (90 °C and airflow of 15 L/h for 24 h) and protection from tocopherols was compared with that fr… Show more

“…This value showed a very positive result as it decreased between MO0 and MO50 samples. Considering that in sunflower oil the corresponding COX value is close to six [ 22 ], 20% lower than the TM samples of our study, it is proved that they possess better oxidative stability, and thus, have a longer shelf life.…”

“…The defatting procedure was repeated three times on the solid residue. The procedure for the detection of fatty acids and their abundance in T. molitor larval samples was followed according to Athanasiadis et al [ 22 ]. More specifically, fatty acid methyl esters were prepared by reaction of the oil (200 μL) with a small amount of sodium methoxide in methanol at room temperature.…”

“…Lately, antioxidant compounds are gaining more and more interest as a vital part of a healthy diet, aiming to prevent damage caused by oxidative stress. In addition to their health benefits, antioxidant compounds can also protect a food product against oxidation [29]. More specifically, antioxidant compounds such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are added to food products to prevent oxidative degradation.…”

“…According to Commission Regulation (EC) No 796/2002 (Annex XB) [26], the fatty acid content of the samples was determined by making the appropriate fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). FAMEs were analyzed according to a previous study [27]. In brief, 0.1 g of extracted fat was diluted with 2 mL of n-hexane.…”
