Evaluation of the effectiveness of early or delayed treatment upon healing of mandibular fractures: A retrospective study

Abstract: Objectives:This study was aimed to assess the impacts of delay treatment of mandibular fracture and its complications. In addition risk variables related such as time to repair, fracture types, substance abuse, causes, surgical management, muddling or complications and duration of clinic stay were also evaluated.Materials and Methods:The data of patients attending the Newcastle General Hospital, UK for the management of mandibular fractures were probed. This retrospective clinical trial conducted over 6 months… Show more

“…In this study, the inclusion criteria included general conditions, local injury severity, and treatment measures, which allowed the authors to measure the risk factors of MDRB infection more comprehensively. Their previous retrospective analysis of risk factors for MDRB infection in patients with RIF of mandibular fracture found that obesity, preoperative infection, and open fractures were independent risk factors for infection, [9][10][11] indicating that general conditions and injury complexity are closely related to infection, which is consistent with other studies. 12,13 It is believed that age, gender, obesity, and smoking history could affect the body's antiinfection ability through influencing genetic and immune status.…”

“…Six of 20 included studies did not report mean patient age making exclusion of irrelevant studies more difficult. 8 , 31 , 33 , 37 , 40 , 41 Reported follow-up times were regularly shorter than 12 weeks, and 9 of 20 included studies did not report any follow-up data (Table 6 ). Inadequate follow-up periods were, however, penalized as part of the MINORS scoring criteria (Tables 3 , 4).…”

“…Formal statistical analysis in the form of P values or confidence intervals was lacking among included studies to substantiate recommendations supporting shorter treatment delay. 8 , 31 , 37 In general, there was a lack of stratified time delay data for cohort study subgroups and case–control subgroups, thereby preventing meaningful statistical calculations that could determine quantitatively if in fact treatment delay was associated with an increased risk of complications. Even in the best-case scenario (Fig.…”

“…Therefore, open fractures present a high risk of infection 16 , requiring pre-, trans-and post-operative care aimed at preventing infection, maintaining blood volume, copious intraoral and extraoral irrigation, scrubbing and debridement of the wound, exploration and removal of fractured fragments and debris, reduction and fixation of the stumps to establish bone continuity, antibiotic and anti-tetanus prophylaxis, tissue synthesis, maintenance of suction drainage, daily cleaning of the wound, oral hygiene and the establishment of a suitable diet 2,11,[13][14][15][17][18] .…”
