Evaluation of the Effect of Education Provided by Pharmacists on Hyperlipidemic Patient’s Adherence to Medications and Blood Level of Lipids

Abstract: Background: Hyperlipidemia is one of the most common chronic diseases. Studies show that many patients have suboptimal adherence to statin medication which leads to serious negative health consequences. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the effect of education by pharmacists for hyperlipidemic patients treated with statins on patient's adherence to medication and their level of blood lipids. “…Among lipid-lowering drugs, Statins provide the key support for treating hyperlipidemia by inhibiting the hepatic synthesis of cholesterol and consequently reducing other lipid fractions 5 . Despite the statins demonstrating agreeable results, patient compliance has been reported to be only 40%-60% 6 , the reason being adverse effects such as digestive system disturbances, myalgia, myositis, and rhabdomyolysis 7 , raised levels of glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C ) 8 and elevation of transaminases, thereby limiting the statins usefulness in acute and chronic liver diseases 9 . During the last couple of decades, phytochemicals derived from squalene and terpenoids have received the most attention due to their vast range of biological actions 10 .…”
