Evaluation of the Effect of Surgical Extraction of an Impacted Mandibular Third Molar on the Periodontal Status of the Second Molar—Prospective Study

Abstract: Dental injury to the second molar (SM) caused by the surgical extraction of the impacted third molar tends to be underestimated. The necessity of assessment of the impact of the removal of the wisdom tooth in the mandible on the second molar arose. The study group (n = 60) was the one with the second molar on the surgical side, and the control group (n = 60) was the one with the tooth on the opposite side of the alveolar arch. Before the surgery, the difficulty level was assessed according to the Pederson scal… Show more

“…Periodontal disease, initiated by bacterial biofilms, can cause the destruction of soft and hard periodontal tissues, consequently leading to tooth loss [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Periodontal disease produces inflammatory mediators and microbial products that can enter the systemic circulation through the mouth and reach distant organs [ 8 , 9 ]. Indeed, several studies have shown a link between periodontal disease and some frequent systemic pathologies [ 10 ] such as diabetes [ 11 ], cardiovascular disease [ 12 , 13 ], respiratory disease [ 14 ], obesity [ 15 ], cancer [ 16 , 17 ], and preterm birth (PTB) [ 7 ].…”

“…The management of post-surgical complications after surgical removal of LM3, as periodontal status and increased mobility of LM2, pain, swelling, trismus and temperature has been significantly improved in the last years through the use of novel techniques. Among all the new techniques, it is worth highlighting how kinesiotaping can meet with greater approval, especially in patients of developmental age, as is already known in sports and by the media [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ].…”

“…Because of their various spatial positions and relationships with the surrounding anatomical tissues, surgical removal of impacted MTMs is a difficult procedure [ 4 ]. There has been evidence that surgical removal of an impacted MTM affects both the pulp sensitivity and the periodontal health of the MSM [ 10 , 11 ]. Therefore, clinical examination of the MSM is required before and after surgical removal of an impacted MTM [ 10 ].…”
