Changes in the principal sources of Pb in overbank sediment profiles have been documented for two Spanish areas by using Pb isotopes and Pb concentrations. These locations (Madrid and Tinto-Odiel basin) represent two of the most contaminated regions in Spain. The Community of Madrid is characterized by heavy industrial and urban activity, focused mainly in Madrid City. The Tinto-Odiel basin drains the Iberian Pyrite Belt, which hosts many polymetallic massive sulphides and is heavily affected by mining activities in their headwaters. It has been proven that the influence of anthropogenic activity is reflected in these overbank deposits by variations in Pb concentrations that, in general, correlate with shifts in the (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratio. Rivas profile (downstream of Madrid) was found to be the most anthropogenically influenced site. The sediments within this profile which were recently deposited (170 ± 40 years BP) have the least radiogenic signatures. (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratios ranged between 1.1763 and 1.1876 indicating significant contributions of anthropogenic Pb. In contrast, profiles upstream of Madrid possess an average (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratio of 1.2272. It is difficult to clearly identify the most prominent source as the sediments appear to be characterized by an input from several sources. The floodplain profiles in the Tinto-Odiel basin exhibit uniform (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratios ranging from 1.1627 (Odiel river) to 1.1665 (Tinto river). These ratios are similar to the ones possessed by sulphide ores in the area and differ from the ratios of other nonmineralized formations in the basin, indicating that mining activities are the primary, if not sole, source of Pb to the sediments.

This paper investigates the pollution load of selected trace elements in 32 soil samples collected around 21 different mining areas of the Iberian Pyrite Belt (Southwest Spain), integrating chemical data with soil parameters to help understand the partitioning and mobility of pollutants. The minesoils are depleted in acid neutralising minerals and show limiting physicochemical properties, including low pH values and very high anomalies of potentially hazardous metals. The total concentrations of As (up to 1,560 mg kg −1 ) and certain heavy metals (up to 2,874 mg kg −1 Cu, 6,500 mg kg −1 Pb, 6,890 mg kg −1 Zn, 62 mg kg −1 Hg and 22 mg kg −1 Cd) are two orders of magnitude above the soil background values. The close association of Cd and Zn with the carbonate content in limeamended minesoils suggests metal immobilisation through adsorption and/or co-precipitation mechanisms, after acid neutralisation, whereas As and Pb are similarly partitioned into the soil and mostly associated with iron oxy-hydroxides.

-Suspended sediment transportation and associated pollutants from catchment to stream networks are responsible for aquatic habitat degradation, reservoir sedimentation and the transportation of sediment bound pollutants. Quantifying suspended sediment loads from lands to watercourses is essential in controlling soil erosion and in implementing appropriate mitigation practices to reduce stream sediment and associated pollutant loads, and hence improve surface water quality downstream.The main objective of this study is to evaluate the temporal variability of hydrology, sediment and nickel loads using Soil and Water Assessment Tool in Oka watershed located in north Spain. Model simulation was completed using 11 years historical records (2001-2009 for validation and 2009-2012 for calibration) of streamflow and suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Thestreamflow, SSC and sediment load estimated from the model were compared with observed data using statistical parameters, which indicates a successful simulation. The annual production of simulated sediments shows variability between 662 and 1515 t, with a mean specific yield of 33 t km x2 y x1 . The annual load of nickel simulated ranged from 32 to 72 kg, representing a mean specific of 1.63 kg km x2 year x1 . The information obtained from this research is of interest to understand long term interannual variability of suspended sediment and nickel yield.
