Evaluation of the diagnostic utility of cytologic examination of renal fine-needle aspirates from dogs and the use of ultrasonographic features to inform cytologic diagnosis

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To describe cytologic characteristics of renal fine-needle aspirate (FNA) samples from dogs, evaluate proportions of cytologic specimens deemed adequate for interpretation (diagnostic yield), assess diagnostic utility of cytologic examination for neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases, and characterize ultrasonographic features of evaluated kidneys to determine whether the imaging characteristics could be used to inform cytologic interpretations. DESIGN Retrospective, observational study. SAMPLE 102 c… Show more

“…Furthermore, renal FNA can be used to assist with the cytological diagnosis of solitary or multifocal masses, dramatic echotextural changes, and renomegaly without hydronephrosis on abdominal ultrasonography [4]. The sensitivity and specificity of cytology for the detection of neoplastic lesions is 78% and 50%, respectively [28]. Compared to histopathological examination, it is an accurate and reliable method for lymphoma diagnosis [7], with a 100% sensitivity rate [28].…”

Compared to histopathological examination, it is an accurate and reliable method for lymphoma diagnosis [7], with a 100% sensitivity rate [28]. Conversely, the diagnosis of RCC through cytologic examination alone can be challenging because RCC histopathologic features have variable cellular pleomorphism [28].…”

“…Ultrasound (US) evaluation of the kidney is a routine test commonly used in veterinary medicine [ 1 ]. B-mode (brightness mode) US evaluation of canine kidneys has been used to the examination of the renal margin, renal cortical echogenicity (RCE) [ 2 3 ], and calculi [ 4 ] and lesions such as cysts and neoplastic masses [ 5 6 ].…”
