Evaluation of the critical size for the nucleation of precipitates in AlZn alloys

Abstract: On the basis of Becker's classical theory of nucleation and evaluations of the volume, surface, and coherency stress parts of the free enthalpy, the critical sizes for the homogeneous nucleation of fully coherent Guinier‐Preston zones as well as precipitates of the partially coherent α′m‐phase are calculated. In addition the heterogeneous nucleation of precipitates at edge dislocations is considered. The obtained results agree well with experimental observations.
