Evaluation of the Correlation between Colour Power Doppler Flow Imaging and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Breast Cancer

Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the correlation between blood flow, using colour power Doppler flow imaging [CPDI], and protein levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), as measured by optical density (OD), in breast tumours. Breast cancer patients were observed pre-operatively using CPDI and VEGF protein levels were quantified by immunohistochemistry, and the correlation between the two was studied. The relationship between tumour angiogenesis and axillary lymph node (LN) metastasis was also an… Show more

“…The broad application of EBUS in daily clinical practice opens new opportunities for ultrasound‐guided LN sampling. Several studies have shown that sonographical findings seem to be associated with malignancy in LN, for example, in head and neck, breast, cervix, or oesophageal cancer 9–16 . In a retrospective lung cancer study, four sonographical features were found to be predictive of malignancy in mediastinal LN (round shape, distinct margin, heterogeneous echogenicity, presence of coagulation necrosis sign) 17 …”

“…Other modalities that provide measures of regional perfusion include DCE-MRI (often used to measure the effect of anti-angiogenic agents) [9,10], Doppler ultrasound [72,73], and optical imaging [15]. Agents for specific imaging of angiogenesis (for example, 18 F -galacto arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) peptide) have also undergone early testing in humans [74].…”

“…Recently, several studies have demonstrated useful applications of ultrasound in dermatology, particularly as an indicator of cutaneous fibrosis or to evaluate melanoma lesions [16,17]. Our experience suggests that skin ultrasonology, particularly when performed with an extremely high frequency probes, could be important for both the diagnosis and therapy management of KS, in association with color power Doppler flow imaging, to detect the vascular activity of the cutaneous lesions [18,19]. …”
