One important element of understanding basin response to strong shaking is the analysis of spectral ratios, which may provide information about the dominant frequency of ground motion at specific locations. Spectral ratios computed from accelerations recorded by strong-motion stations in Mexico City during the mainshock of the 19 September 2017 M 7.1 Puebla-Morelos earthquake reveal predominate periods consistent with those mapped in the 2004 Mexican seismic design code. Furthermore, the predominant periods thus computed validate those studies using mainshock and aftershock recordings of the handful strong-motion stations that recorded the 19 September 1985 M 8.1 Michoacán earthquake. Even though the number of stations in each of the zones (zones I, II, IIIa, b, c, and d) is not the same, they still allow confirmation of site frequencies (periods) attributable to the specific zones (particularly those in zones IIIa, b, c, and d). Spectral ratios are computed with two different methods: (1) horizontal to horizontal (H/H) ratio of smoothed amplitude spectrum of a horizontal channel in direction X of a station with respect to the smoothed amplitude spectrum of the horizontal channel in the same X direction of a reference stiff soil (or rock) station and (2) horizontal to vertical (H/V) ratio (or also known as the Nakamura method) of both horizontal (H) and vertical (V) channels of the same station. We show a comparison of the identified frequencies (periods) derived by both methods and find they are very similar and in good agreement with those indicated in the zoning maps of Mexico City in the 2004 seismic design code.

RESUMEN La versión vigente de las Normas Técnicas Complementarias para Diseño porSismo (NTCDS) del Reglamento de Construcciones del DF fue desarrollada entre 1999 y 2000, y fue promulgada en 2004. De entonces a la fecha se han llevado a cabo diversas investigaciones que, junto con ideas de cambio que han ocurrido en el mundo, han permitido desarrollar una nueva versión de las NTCDS que posiblemente entrarán en vigor en 2016. En el presente trabajo se describen algunas de las modificaciones más novedosas, de entre las que destacan: a) una nueva "nanozonificación" sísmica que permite obtener espectros de diseño de sitio para casi todo el Distrito Federal; b) la inclusión de los cambios observados en las propiedades de los suelos por efecto del bombeo de agua; y c) los nuevos criterios para la especificación de sobreresistencia y reducciones por ductilidad. En adición, se discute la estructura general de la nueva norma y se reflexiona sobre las ventajas y limitaciones de las modificaciones propuestas.PALABRAS CLAVE: códigos de diseño, nanozonación, sobre-resistencia, reducción de la ductilidad In this paper, some of the most recent modifications are described, such as: a) a new seismic "nanozonation" that allows obtaining site design spectra for almost the entire Federal District; b) the inclusion of the changes observed in the properties of the soils due to the effect of water pumping; and c) the new criteria for the specification of over-resistance and reductions by ductility. In addition, it discusses the general structure of the new standard and reflects on the advantages and limitations of the proposed modifications.

Predictive models for estimating strong-motion duration in sites characterized by soft-soil profiles are presented in this paper. The models were developed using a strong-motion database that includes observations from subduction interface earthquakes that occurred from 1989 to 2020 and recorded in Mexico City, which is located at source-to-site distances up to 600 km. A linear mixed-effects regression model, which is a statistical fitting procedure that allows to consider the correlation structure of grouped data, was used to develop the predictive models. Relative significant duration was selected to measure strong-motion duration. This measure can be directly associated with the accumulation of energy of the ground movement. The proposed predictive models relate relative significant duration with moment magnitude, either hypocentral distance or closest distance to the rupture plane, and dominant period of the soil. Regression analyses were performed grouping the ground-motion data by both seismic event and site class. Model assumptions, such as homoscedasticity, normality, and linearity of effects, were verified from residual analyses. From the results, the expected value of the natural logarithm of relative significant duration was found to be ∼1.2 times greater for an earthquake with a moment magnitude equal to 8.0 than for one of 6.0. An insightful discussion about the sources and character of the uncertainties detected in the proposed predictive models is also presented in this study. The predictive models proposed in this paper are of valuable application in seismic and structural engineering because they allow to circumscribe properly the dimension and randomness of strong-motion duration.
