Evaluation of the Catalytic Activities of Some Synthesized Divalent and Trivalent Metal Complexes and Their Inhibition Efficiencies for the Corrosion of Mild Steel in Sulfuric Acid Medium

Some new 1:1 (ML) and 1:2 (ML2) metal complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) have been synthesized with novel ligand, that is, 4‐(3‐methylthiophene‐2‐ylmethyleneamino)‐3‐mercapto‐6‐methyl‐5‐oxo‐1,2,4‐triazine. Ligand and its metal complexes were characterized on the basis of various physicochemical techniques like elemental analysis, magnetic moment, molar conductance, cyclic voltammetry, and spectroscopic (1H‐NMR, infrared [IR], electronic, fluorescence, and electron spin resonance [ESR]) data. On the basis of these studies, octahedral and square planar geometries have been proposed for Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cu(II) metal complexes, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out to study the thermal decomposition and stability of metal complexes. Electrochemical behavior of Cu(II) complexes have also been explored by cyclic voltammetry. The complexes have shown promising antimicrobial activity when checked by in vitro method against some bacterial and fungal strains. In addition to these studies, quantum mechanical approach was also performed in order to find some structural information of newly synthesized compounds.

A new asymmetric Salamo-based ligand H 2 L was synthesized using 3-tert-butyl-salicylaldehyde and 6-methoxy-2-[O-(1-ethyloxyamide)]-oxime-1-phenol. By adjusting the ratio of the ligand H 2 L and Cu (II), Co (II), and Ni (II) ions, mononuclear, dinuclear, and trinuclear transition metal (II) complexes, [Cu(L)], [{Co(L)} 2 ], and [{Ni(L)(CH 3 COO)(CH 3 CH 2 OH)} 2 Ni] with the ligand H 2 L possessing completely different coordination modes were obtained, respectively. The optical spectra of ligand H 2 L and its Cu (II), Co (II) and Ni (II) complexes were investigated. The Cu (II) complex is a mononuclear structure, and the Cu (II) atom is tetracoordinated to form a planar quadrilateral structure. The Co (II) complex is dinuclear, and the two Co (II) atoms are pentacoordinated and have coordination geometries of distorted triangular bipyramid. The Ni (II) complex is a trinuclear structure, and the terminal and central Ni (II) atoms are all hexacoordinated, forming distorted octahedral geometries. Furthermore, optical properties including UV-Vis, IR, and fluorescence of the Cu (II), Co (II), and Ni (II) complexes were investigated. Finally, the antibacterial activities of the Cu (II), Co (II), and Ni (II) complexes were explored. According to the experimental results, the inhibitory effect was found to be enhanced with increasing concentrations of the Cu (II), Co (II), and Ni (II) complexes.

Funding information DST-FIST Program of India Schiff base ligand named 2-((E)-(2-fluorophenylimino)methyl)phenol (HL) was prepared by the condensation of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 2-fluorobenzamine in 1:1 molar ratio. The coordination behaviour of a series of transition metal ions with the synthesized HL ligand, [Cr(HL) 2 ] (1), [Fe (HL) 2 ] (2), [Co(HL) 2 ] (3) and [Cu(HL) 2 ] (4) is reported. The structure and bonding of the metal complexes have been deduced by analytical and spectral studies. Based on the above studies, the metal centres were found to be octahedral for all the complexes. The activation thermodynamic properties were calculated using the Coats-Redfern method. Thermal decomposition processes of complexes 1, 2, 3 and 4 are non-spontaneous; that is, the complexes are thermally stable. The positive value of Gibbs free energy of decomposition (ΔG*) for all the complexes is non-spontaneous processes. DNA binding properties of these metal complexes, investigated using UV-visible absorption, fluorescence and viscosity measurement studies, imply that the complexes bind to DNA by intercalation. The intrinsic binding constant K b from the electronic absorption studies are 3.12 × 10 4 M −1 , 1.86 × 10 4 M −1 , 3.96 × 10 4 M −1 and 5.89 × 10 4 M −1 , and the Stern-Volmer quenching constant K sv values from fluorescence studies are 2.29 × 10 4 M −1 , 1.92 × 10 4 M −1 , 5.62 × 10 4 M −1 and 8.91 × 10 4 M −1 , for the complexes 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. DNA photo cleavage activities of these complexes were studied with supercoiled pUC19 DNA, in the presence of H 2 O 2. GOLD 3.1 program was used to evaluate binding affinities of complexes with human DNA topoisomerase I protein. in vitro cytotoxic and antimicrobial studies revealed higher activity of metal complexes, compared with the ligand.
