Evaluation of the Behring Nephelometer for Detection of Low Level Urinary Albumin

Abstract: Mildly increased urinary albumin excretion rates and concentrations, below the quantity normally detected by conventional urinary protein and albumin methods, have prognostic significance for the development of nephropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus. The authors evaluated the automated Behring Nephelometer using Behring reagents for the detection of low level urinary albumin. Within run coefficients of variation (CVs, N = 20) are 1.7%, 1.3%, and 2.4% at mean urinary albumin levels of 16, 70, and 217 mg… Show more

“…Urinary albumin excretion (UAE) was measured from a 24-h collection using radioimmunoassay techniques (Double Antibody Albumin #KHD2; Diagnostic Products, Los Angeles, CA). During the first 8 months of the study, UAE was initially measured by the nephelometric method (20). The correlation coefficient for the two methods was r 2 = 0.99.…”

“…Urine albumin concentrations were measured within 10 days of storage at standard refrigerator temperature. During the first 8 months of the study, urinary albumin concentration was measured by the nephelometric method (21), which has a sensitivity of 2 mg/dl, and thereafter, UAE was measured using radioimmunoassay (Double Antibody Albumin #KHD2, Diagnostic, Los Angeles, CA), which has a sensitivity of 0.3 mg/dl and an interassay coefficient of variation of 3%. The correlation coefficient for the two methods was r 2 = 0.99 (n = 68).…”

“…Triglycerides were assayed using an enzymatic method [15]. Urinary albumin, using fresh samples, was measured by an immunochemical method on a Behring Nephelometer 100 (Behringwerke, Germany) [17]. All measurements were performed on a Hitachi 717 analyser, using reagents from Boehringer Mannheim.…”

“…All measurements were performed on a Hitachi 717 analyser, using reagents from Boehringer Mannheim. Urinary albumin, using fresh samples, was measured by an immunochemical method on a Behring Nephelometer 100 (Behringwerke, Germany) [17]. Untimed urine collections were assayed and test results, as recommended, expressed in urinary albumin-to-urinary creatinine ratio (mg mmol ¹1 ) [18].…”
