Evaluation of the Antioxidant Activity of the Marine Pyrroloiminoquinone Makaluvamines

Abstract: Makaluvamines are pyrroloiminoquinones isolated from Zyzzya sponges. Until now, they have been described as topoisomerase II inhibitors with cytotoxic effects in diverse tumor cell lines. In the present work, seven makaluvamines were tested in several antioxidant assays in primary cortical neurons and neuroblastoma cells. Among the alkaloids studied, makaluvamine J was the most active in all the assays. This compound was able to reduce the mitochondrial damage elicited by the well-known stressor H2O2. The anti… Show more

“…Marine sponges are also important sources of bioactive metabolites [ 36 ], including compounds with antioxidant properties [ 73 , 74 ], and it is also known that marine collagen-derived peptides possess radical scavenging activity. All of the four FSs that were extracted from C. reniformis showed antioxidant properties ( Figure 10 ).…”

“…Among the antioxidant enzymes and proteins are SOD, GSH and CAT that catalyze the processing of ROS to less toxic molecules. GSH and CAT are some of the main antioxidant defenses in the cells [14]. Among biomarkers of oxidative stress, MDA and SOD are known to be two sensitive indicators [15].…”

“…484 was a potent antioxidant. 485 The quintessential MNPs oroidin 486 and sceptrin 487 had antibacterial adjuvant activity and suppressed antibiotic resistance, 488 while the former is also a new lead for HIV antiviral development. 489 Isostularin-3 (Aplysina aerophoba) 490 was found to induce apoptosis, with a novel mode of action via inhibition of DNA methyltransferase 1, making it a new anticancer lead.…”
