Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Activity of Nanostructured Materials of Titanium Dioxide Doped with Silver and/or Copper and Their Effects onArabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: Nanostructured materials (NSMs) of silver (Ag@TiO2) and copper (TiO2-Cu2+) doped titanium dioxide were synthesized, fully characterized, and evaluated for their antimicrobial efficiency and effects onArabidopsis thaliana. The NSMs were prepared using an environmentally benign route. The physicochemical properties of the materials were determined with analytical techniques. These materials are active under visible light, exhibit a small size (10–12 nm), are crystalline (anatase), and liberate metal ions (Ag+and… Show more

“…However, we aim to develop robust NMs that exert antifungal activity through diverse mechanisms; TiO 2 -Cu 2+ /CuI. Our results demonstrate the enhanced antifungal activity of the TiO 2 -Cu 2+ /CuI composite; we can observe that the incorporation of TiO 2 enhanced the CuI activity, thus obtaining a lower MFC of 10 µg/mL, attributed to the TiO 2 -Cu 2+ antimicrobial activity and capacity to form reactive oxygen species (ROS) [ 11 , 41 ].…”

“…The aerobic mesophilic microorganisms were counted using the plate pouring technique on the agar medium for standard methods. One ml of the dilutions of each water treatment in 20 ml of agar medium for standard methods was added and incubated at 37°C for 24-48 h. After that time, the count of the colonies was carried out and the log inhibition (log10 N0/N) was calculated for each treatment; where N0 is the initial count, and N is the count after treatment [36]. The results were analyzed by means of a one-way ANOVA followed by a Tukey test (α < 0:05).…”

“…After each exposure period, aliquots were taken from the suspension and inoculated in solid LB medium for 19 h at 37 °C and the CFU/mL number was counted. The log inactivation was calculated as log 10 (N/ N 0 ), where N 0 represents the initial CFU/mL and N the CFU/ mL treatment survivors (Garcidueñas-Piña et al, 2016). The experiments were performed for triplicate and maintained under sterile conditions.…”
