Evaluation of the Anticancer Potential of the Traditional Medicinal Herb Isodon coetsa

Abstract: Cancer is one of the most dreadful diseases engulfing mankind with the toll of life being taken away. Researchers always focus on traditional medicines to overcome such diseases because of the side effects and high cost of synthetic drugs making it inaccessible especially for inhabitants of developing countries. Isodon is a genus well established in Chinese folk medicines and have reported activities of anticancer effect with low toxicity due to the presence of biologically active diterpenoids. Thus, a study o… Show more

“…It is also present in wines, especially red wines and to a much lesser extent in white wines (Shigematsu et al, 2003, Ramadevi et al, 2016). In addition to anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective properties, one of the biological activities of resveratrol has been attributed to involve its antioxidant potential (Fremont, 2000, Kalaiselvi et al, 2016, Neelamkavil and Thoppil, 2016, Valsan and Raphael, 2016). Resveratrol has been shown to inhibit membrane lipid peroxidation, scavenge free radicals by increasing antioxidant levels and inhibit platelet aggregation and protect several organs from I/R injury (de la Lastra and Villegas, 2007, Noorudheen and Chandrasekharan, 2016).…”

“…Various reports exhibited that anthocyanins possess the strong anti-inflammatory action, and down-turn of interleukin-6, TNF-α and MCP-1 can lead to improvement of insulin resistance (Jayaprakasam et al, 2005). Furthermore, recent studies have proven that dietary intake of phytochemicals rich in cyanidin 3-glucoside is significantly associated with enhanced insulin sensitivity in the experimental model of insulin resistance (Guo et al, 2012, Neelamkavil and Thoppil, 2016, Valsan and Raphael, 2016). Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is a plant pigment which belongs to anthocyanin family, which abundantly occurs in edible berries, colored fruits and flowers (Sri Harsha et al, 2013).…”
