Evaluation of the Analgesic Effect of Combination Therapy on Chronic Plantar Pain Through the Myofascial Trigger Points Approach

Abstract: The suggested combination therapy of ultrasound with ICST is clinically significant for reducing plantar pain after 15 treatment sessions, with a 6.5-point reduction in mean PIP and a 4.6-point increase in PPT.

“…In fact, a greater number of muscle TrPs could presume the presence of spatial pain summation related to peripheral and central sensitization, as previously reported in other conditions [ 48 ], since TrPs could be considered as prolonged and relevant peripheral nociceptive inputs triggering sensitization mechanisms related to widespread pain and spatial pain summation [ 50 , 51 ]. Thus, improvements in PPTs related to TrPs treatment for PHP previously found [ 52 , 53 , 54 ] could confirm the role of TrPs in peripheral and central sensitization in PHP, supporting associations between TrPs and PPTs shown in this study. Additionally, previous results also showed improvements in the quality of life related to TrPs treatment [ 55 , 56 ], supporting the association between these variables and suggesting that this approach may be effective for the management of PHP.…”

“…Of these, 475 were excluded, and 55 were exposed to a thorough review of the full article. Twenty-two studies were excluded after the review of the full article because of a lack of randomization, [26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] using different study designs, 35,36 the lack of a control group, 37,38 different study populations (comparing two different treatments with one including ICF), 39,40 lack of the required outcome measures, [41][42][43] different languages, 44,45 inaccessibility of the full article, 46 and a lack of the desired intervention. 47 The final results included 33 trials in addition to two other trials 12,48 that were added after the manual search of the reference list (see Supplemental Digital Content 3, http://links.lww.com/ PHM/B380).…”

“…Thus, the primary dysmenorrhea is a health problem that deserves attention and seeks non-medicated ways of therapy, such as the use of physical therapy modalities, such as exercises, heat and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation of low frequency 18 . But, a widely used analgesic modality in the physiotherapeutic field is the currents of medium frequency, in the CIV stands out, with interesting results not only in cases of pain, but also with functional improvements and quality of life, when used in isolation [19][20][21][22] or associated to ultrasound 23 .…”
