“…Our data support the findings of previous manikin studies of inexperienced practitioners, using other indirect or videolaryngoscopes, such as the Airway Scope (Pentax, Tokyo, Japan) [11,12,15,16], Glidescope (Verathon Medical, Bothell, WA, USA) [14,16], and Airtraq (Fannin (UK) Ltd, Calcot, Reading UK) [9,10,13], and adds to these by showing that videolaryngoscopy can aid the teaching of direct laryngoscopy. These studies differ in some respects including the difficulty of laryngoscopy, the numbers of intubation attempts studied, and the nature and detail of instruction given before tracheal intubation was attempted.…”

“…Based on previous studies [9,10,15], we assumed an overall success rate of tracheal intubation of 95% for the McGrath and 85% for the Macintosh. We calculated that 184 intubations per laryngoscope were needed to achieve 80% power at a significance level of 0.05 (two-sided), and rounded the number to 200 for each laryngoscope.…”

“…14 Our finding that the Pentax AWS Ò reduced tracheal intubation times agrees with one 14 but does not agree with a second 22 prior study in novice users. Of particular interest, the duration of intubation attempts with the AWS Ò compared well with that recorded by experienced anesthesiologists in our recent study.…”

“…[4] Videolaryngoscopy has become a widely accepted technique for training both novice and inexperienced medical staff on airway management. [5][6][7] In cases where neither direct laryngoscopy nor tracheal intubation is achieved, videolaryngoscopes generally secure the glottic view with less manipulation as compared to direct laryngoscopes. Besides, because learning the technique is relatively easy, videolaryngoscopy brings high success rates even for beginners.…”
