Evaluation of the Adsorption Capacity of Chitosan Quaternized in the Removal of Cu²⁺and Cr³⁺Ions

Abstract

The treatment of effluents containing heavy metals by adsorption, using biopolymers as adsorbents have been widely investigated in order to obtain a material with high efficiency, readily available and economically feasible. As a natural adsorbent of metal ions, chitosan has shown good results, but the modification of its structure and crosslinking with chemical agents provides greater efficiency in adsorption processes. In this work, we have investigated the adsorption of Cu 2+ and Cr 3+ ions on chemically modified chitosan with a quaternary ammonium salt and crosslinked with glutaraldehyde. This modification leads to an increase in the adsorption capacity of the studied ions in comparison with the unmodified chitosan. Concluded that modifying the chemical structure of the adsorbent provided greater efficiency in the removal of studied ions with respect to unmodified chitosan. Resumo O tratamento de efluentes contendo metais pesados via adsorção, utilizando biopolímeros como adsorventes, têm sido amplamente investigados com intuito de se obter um material que apresente alta eficiência, fácil obtenção e que seja economicamente viável. Como adsorvente natural de íons metálicos, a quitosana vem apresentando bons resultados, porém a modificação e a reticulação de sua estrutura com agentes químicos proporciona uma maior eficiência nos processos de adsorção. Neste trabalho investigamos a adsorção de íons Cu 2+ e Cr 3+ pela quitosana modificada quimicamente com um sal de amônio quaternário e reticulado com glutaraldeído. Esta modificação levou a um aumento na capacidade de adsorção de íons estudados em comparação com a quitosana não modificada. Conclui-se que a modificação da estrutura química do adsorvente proporcionou uma maior eficiência na remoção dos íons em estudo com relação a quitosana não modificada.
