Evaluation of tests for antibody response in the follow-up of patients with acute and chronic forms of paracoccidioidomycosis

Abstract: Several serological tests have been used successfully in the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). In contrast, data about the use of these tests in the follow-up of PCM patients have been heterogeneous. In this study, serum samples from 43 PCM patients with different clinical forms were analysed by counter-immuno-electrophoresis (CIE), complement fixation (CF) and ELISA before treatment. With CIE and ELISA, the chronic unifocal form showed significantly lower antibody levels compared with chronic multifo… Show more

“…Falsenegative results for specific antibodies may occur in patients not infected with HIV, especially those with the chronic form of the disease and an unifocal, small lesion (Del Negro et al 2000). Patients with this form of paracoccidioidomycosis have a less intense humoral immunological response than patients with acute/subacute form of the disease (Panunto-Castelo et al 2003).…”

“…The titration of anti-P. brasiliensis antibodies is important for the laboratory diagnosis and follow up of paracoccidioidomycosis. Patients with active disease usually have high antibody levels, which decline with antifungal therapy and clinical recovery (Del Negro et al 2000).…”

“…Os testes ELISA e imunodifusão foram úteis para detectar recaída da doença, conforme já assinalada a importância da associação do ELISA com outro teste sorológico 11 . Em geral, observamos títulos altos à admissão, e baixos ou negativos a partir de 12 o mês de tratamento.…”

“…Serological tests are useful, and IgG, IgM, and IgE are regularly detected, but sensitivity is reduced in patients with disorders that cause immunosuppression (100,109). The ID test is more specific than CF but is not quantitative.…”
