A watershed ecosystem is a compound ecosystem composed of land and rivers, and its health is closely related to the sustainable development of the region it is located in. The Yihe River Basin (YRB) in central China’s Henan province, which is located in the north–south transition zone and has a mountain–hill–plain landscape from the upstream to the downstream, is adopted as the research area in this study. A watershed ecosystem health assessment system is constructed based on an ecosystem vigor–organization–resilience–service supply and demand harmony (EVORSH) framework and utilized to assess the ecosystem health in the YRB by taking a 3 km × 3 km grid as the evaluation unit. Thirteen factors are selected from natural and human social factors, and from them, the factors that influence watershed ecosystem health through the generation of spatial heterogeneity are identified using the geographical detector model. The following findings are obtained. (1) The mean value of ecosystem health levels in the YRB is 0.65 and at the good level. The ecosystem health has considerable spatial heterogeneity. The areas with high–high concentration are distributed in the mountains in the upper reaches of the YRB, and the areas with low–low concentration are mainly distributed in the plain areas in the middle reaches of the YRB. (2) The geographical detector result shows that 9 of 13 factors have a considerable impact on the spatial distribution of the YRB’s ecosystem health. The interaction between two factors is enhanced synergically. The decisive power of population density, rainfall, and potential evapotranspiration are more than 0.5, so these three are the main factors that influence the distribution of ecosystem health in the YRB. (3) The EVORSH framework is suitable for the measurement of ecosystem health in the YRB. The evaluation result is consistent with the actual situation in the YRB. A 3 km × 3 km grid is used as the basic research unit, and it can more accurately and scientifically express the spatial heterogeneity of ecosystem health in the YRB compared with the macro evaluation unit. This study can provide a scientific basis for ecological protection and high-quality development planning in the YRB. By integrating multi-dimensional data and methods, the EVORSH framework proposed in this study can quickly and scientifically assess the status of ecosystem health, identify the influencing factors of spatial heterogeneity, and could be applied in other similar watersheds.

Ecological integrity can satisfactorily reflect the comprehensive quality of ecosystems and has become a useful tool for evaluating the ecological environment. Ecological integrity evaluation has been widely applied in various ecosystems. Conducted in the Alxa League, the study established an ecological integrity index based on ecosystem structure, function and resilience and evaluated the ecological integrity of the study area in 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020. Using hotspots spatial analyses, we analyzed the temporal and spatial variation of ecological integrity index during the study period. The main contributing factors affecting ecological integrity were identified with the help of the geographical detector model. Our results showed that: (1) Ecosystem structure, function and resilience in the Alxa League had obvious spatial heterogeneity and barely changed from 1990 to 2020. (2) Half of the area had a poor ecological integrity index, and the decrease in ecological integrity mainly occurred in the Alxa Left Banner. (3) Among the factors affecting the ecological integrity index, land use intensity was the major driving factor, and desertification was a key reason leading to the decrease. Ecological integrity evaluation can increase public awareness of desert conditions and guide policy makers to make reasonable and sustainable policies or strategies to protect and restore desert ecosystems.

The Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) is China's golden tourism belt, while also serving as a demonstration model for the construction of an ecological civilization. Therefore, tourism ecosystem health (TEH) is a key consideration for the promotion of sustainable development in the YREB. In this study, we explored the meaning and application of the TEH concept and developed a fivedimensional TEH evaluation index system based on a framework encompassing "vigor-organizational structure-resilience-ecological service functions-residents' health and education level" (VORSH). Taking the YREB as an illustrative case study, we used a coupling-coordination model and the geographic detector method to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution and driving forces of TEH in this region. Key results of the analysis were as follows: (1) Overall, TEH and its five dimensions in the YREB showed steady improvement during the period 2000-2019. (2) The spatial distribution of TEH was high in the eastern part of YREB and low in the western part, with a gradual transference of TEH grades. From 2000 to 2019, transfers of TEH states occurred mainly in two directions. The first entailed transference to a higher-level neighboring state, and the second entailed retention of the original health state. (3) From 2000 to 2019, the coupling-coordination types associated with the five dimensions of TEH in the YREB gradually evolved from a state of being uncoordinated to one of coordination, and the degree of coupling-coordination revealed spatial distribution pattern of east > center > west. (4) The leading factors driving the spatial differentiation of TEH in the YREB were identified as development of the tourism industry and regional economy, urbanization, residents' health conditions, and urban greening. The interactive relationships among these factors indicated a trend of nonlinear enhancement and bi-factor enhancement.
