The objective of this study was to assess the sustainability of 10 dual-purpose cattle farms in a subtropical area of central Mexico. The IDEA method (Indicateurs de Durabilité des Exploitations Agricoles) was applied, which includes the agroecological, socio-territorial and economic scales (scores from 0 to 100 points per scale). A sample of 47 farms from a total of 91 registered in the local livestock growers association was analysed with principal component analysis and cluster analysis. From results, 10 farms were selected for the in-depth study herein reported, being the selection criterion continuous milk production throughout the year. Farms had a score of 88 and 86 points for the agroecological scale in the rainy and dry seasons. In the socio-territorial scale, scores were 73 points for both seasons, being the component of employment and services the strongest. Scores for the economic scale were 64 and 56 points for the rainy and dry seasons, respectively, when no economic cost for family labour is charged, which decreases to 59 and 45 points when an opportunity cost for family labour is considered. Dual-purpose farms in the subtropical area of central Mexico have a medium sustainability, with the economic scale being the limiting factor, and an area of opportunity.

RESUMENEl objetivo fue identificar variables que describen al productor y a la unidad de producción, así como factores cognoscitivos y sociales que influyen en el uso de praderas cultivadas por productores de leche en pequeña escala. La muestra (n=106) se dividió en productores que hacen uso de la innovación (Grupo 1, n= 55) y en productores que no la usan (Grupo 2, n= 51). Los datos se analizaron con la prueba de Mann Withney y la Teoría del Comportamiento Planeado. El uso de praderas cultivadas se vio influenciado por las variables que describen al productor y a la unidad de producción, como se observó en el Grupo 1. Este grupo presentó una mayor proporción de productores (60 %) que indicaron una intención positiva para usar praderas cultivadas, comparado con el 36 % de los productores del Grupo 2. Los productores de ambos grupos percibieron de forma similar la utilidad e importancia del uso de praderas cultivadas; sin embargo, la intención de los productores del Grupo 1 presentó una correlación significativa (P<0.05) con ambas. Otros factores que influyeron en el uso de praderas cultivadas fueron las creencias positivas, referentes sociales y las dificultades percibidas de la innovación. Se concluye que el uso de praderas cultivadas estuvo influenciado por diferentes factores para cada grupo de productores. Construction of a Farm-Level Food Security Index: Case Study of Turkish Dairy Farms

Food security continues to be a global concern and its importance has recently increased for many reasons. Composite food security indices have been widely used to calculate and monitor food security, but farm-level studies are limited. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to construct a Farm-level Food Security Index (FFSI) for dairy farms to assess their contribution to food security, identify potential areas for improvement and guide policy makers. Data were collected from 126 farms in the Thrace Region of Turkey through face-to-face interviews. The FFSI was constructed with four dimensions, briefly called economic, quality, social and natural resources, containing twenty-three variables. Principal component analysis was used for the determination of variable weights, data envelopment analysis for calculating technical efficiency, and the Tobit model for examining the factors influencing FFSI scores. To assess the robustness of the FFSI, Monte Carlo simulations-based uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, dimension extraction approach and Shapley effects sensitivity analysis were performed. With an average score of 56.8, the key result of the FFSI is that dairy farms are using almost half of their potential to fully contribute to food security. Moreover, according to the Tobit model, FFSI scores are significantly affected by the farmer’s age and education level, credit use, livestock unit, fodder crop area and milk marketing channel. The FFSI is robust to weights and sensitive to normalisation, and the social sustainability dimension can cause the largest shift in index scores. Based on these findings, numerous agricultural policy proposals have been developed in this study by identifying the priority areas that need to be addressed to guarantee food security.
