Evaluation of strontium Sr 90 for the treatment of superficial squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal planum in cats: 49 cases (1990–2006)

Abstract: Treatment of cats with SCC of the nasal planum with a single fraction of (90)Sr appeared to be effective and well tolerated. Initial response to treatment was predictive of overall survival time.

“…Tais procedimentos demonstram expressivas disparidades relativas a eficácia, duração do tratamento, período de recuperação do paciente, segurança e onerosidade (Klein 2003, Ferreira et al 2006, Lucas & Larsson 2006, Buchholz et al 2007, Hammond et al 2007, Thomson 2007, Bexfield et al 2008. “…[6] Precancerous (actinic) lesions can persist over months to years, and in some cats a transformation to a more malignant carcinoma in-situ and subsequent invasive variant takes place. [7] Progression is often initially slow, and the pre-malignant or superficial variants of neoplastic condition can be treated by several means, such as photodynamic therapy [810], strontium-90 plesiotherapy [11, 12], intralesional chemotherapy [13], curettage and diathermy. [14] However, for larger or more invasive tumors, extensive surgical removal is often a limited treatment option, due to the aesthetically disfiguring cosmetic outcome.…”

“…Additional tumours may arise on the nasal planum as a consequence of the entire area being exposed to UV light. Numerous treatments have been described including hyperthermia, external beam radiotherapy, nasal planum resection, cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, intralesional chemotherapy, combined radiotherapy and intralesional chemotherapy, strontium-90 plesiotherapy and electrochemotherapy (Grier et al 1980, Carlisle & Gould 1982, Withrow & Straw 1990, Clarke 1991, Peaston et al 1993, Theon et al 1996, Lana et al 1997, de Vos et al 2004, Goodfellow et al 2006, Hammond et al 2007, Spugnini et al 2009). Many of these treatments are highly effective, however, not all are available in general veterinary practice because of their associated expense and the need for specialised equipment and training.…”
