Evaluation of strawberry fruit quality for new selections and cultivars

Abstract: The fruit characteristics of new strawberry genotypes reflect their value for the present and future breeding programs. Beyond the agronomic characteristics, the evaluation of biometric, colorimetric and biochemical characteristics of fresh fruits complete the description of strawberry genotypes. Starting from these ideas, the aim of present study was to evaluate the biometric, colorimetric and biochemical characteristics of seven strawberry cultivars and selections. In this respect, a study was carried out in… Show more

“…For these reasons, the viability of the raspberry after harvest is limited to a few days, usually 3 to 5 days, and only a small percentage of these fruits can be eaten fresh [10,17]. To prevent these defects, it is recommended to store the fruit at a temperature close to 0 • C. However, storing fruit at a low temperature is insufficient to extend the shelf life of raspberry fruit to 14 days, and more and more often, storage is carried out in a controlled atmosphere [25][26][27][28][29]. Maintaining the concentration of CO 2 at a level of 5-20% and O 2 at a level of 3-10% ensures an increase in the durability of stored R. idaeus fruits.…”

“…More recently, the cultivars 'Mira', 'Alba' 'Clery' and 'Albion' have been introduced into production. Commercially available strawberry cultivars are changing rapidly and information on important compounds for taste and associated health benefits should be updated for fruit from recently launched breeding programmes (Sturzeanu et al, 2015;Temocico et al, 2019;Tomiċ et al, 2019). To create genotypes/cultivars with a high size and quality of the berries, visually attractive for traders and consumers, and productive in the edapho-climatic conditions from Romania, one has to select the appropriate parental forms.…”
