Asian soybean rust (ASR) caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi is one of the major diseases limiting soybean yield. This disease has widely spread on soybean crops in Indonesia. The use of resistant cultivars is one of the economical approaches to control ASR. The objectives of this study were to assess the resistance of soybean lines derived from crossing two largeseeded cultivars (Baluran and Grobogan) with a broad adaptive cultivar (Kaba) and to identify resistant genotype characteristics under screen house conditions. All genotypes were artificially inoculated with P. pachyrhizi uredospores. Number of pustules per leaf, the development of ASR, and yield components including number of intact pods per plant, number of empty pods, and weight of pods per plant were observed. Thirteen lines of Baluran pedigrees had higher resistant response to ASR compared to Grobogan pedigrees. Fewer numbers of pustules (8 pustules cm -2 ), lower value of area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), and redish brown (RB) lesion type were observed in resistant lines. In contrast, susceptible lines had more pustules (> 21 pustules cm -2 ), higher AUDPC value, and had mixed lesion type (RB and Tan). ASR reduced seed size and yield. The average weight of 100 seeds of resistant lines was 10.2 g while on susceptible lines, the 100-seed weight ranged from 8.7 to 12.6 g. The average yield per plant varied from 2.7 to 6.1 g. Baluran/Grobogan pedigrees were more susceptible to ASR than Baluran/Kaba pedigrees, however, those pedigrees showed better yield per plant and were supposedly more tolerant to ASR.

ABSTRAKInfeksi penyakit karat yang disebabkan oleh Phakopsora pachyrhizi dapat menyebabkan kehilangan hasil pada kedelai hingga 75%. Salah satu cara mengatasinya ialah dengan menanam varietas tahan. Tujuan penelitian ialah menguji ketahanan 10 genotipe kedelai terhadap penyakit karat. Penelitian dilaksanakan di rumah kaca menggunakan rancangan acak kelompok dengan 3 ulangan. Inokulasi pada tanaman berumur 3 minggu dilakukan dengan menyemprotkan suspensi spora P. pachyrhizi (kepadatan urediniospora 10 4 mL -1 ) ke permukaan daun pada 10 genotipe kedelai (MLGG 0005, MLGG 0253, MLGG 0465, MLGG 0470, var. Argomulyo, var. Tanggamus, var. Wilis, var. Burangrang, var. Grobogan, dan var. Dering 1). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa seluruh genotipe kedelai yang diuji tergolong agak tahan terhadap penyakit karat berdasarkan metode IWGSR. Pada kondisi terinfeksi penyakit karat, kedelai var. Wilis dan Dering 1 mampu menghasilkan biji per tanaman tertinggi, masing-masing seberat 7.15 dan 5.21 g. One solution to overcome the rust disease is by planting resistant varieties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of 10 soybean genotypes to rust disease. The research was conducted in the greenhouse. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Inoculation of rust pathogen on 3 weeks-old plants was done by spraying urediniospore suspension (density 10 4 mL -1 ) to the surface of the leaves on the 10 soybean genotypes (MLGG 0005, MLGG 0253, MLGG 0465, MLGG 0470, var. Argomulyo, var. Tanggamus, var. Wilis, var. Burangrang, var. Grobogan, dan var. Dering 1). The results showed that all soybean genotypes were classified as moderately resistant to rust diseases based on the method of IWGSR. Although the plants were infected by rust disease, var. Wilis and Dering 1 produced the highest seed yield per plant (7.15 and 5.21 g, respectively), due to the good appearance of the plants, and the high number of branches, reproductive nodes, and number of filled pods. Therefore, these genotypes might be used as a good germplasm accession.Key words: germplasm accession, IWGSR, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, soybean variety PENDAHULUANKedelai merupakan salah satu komoditas pangan terpenting di Indonesia. Tahu, tempe, kecap, dan susu merupakan produk olahan yang menggunakan biji kedelai. Umumnya kedelai berbiji besar berwarna kuning untuk pembuatan tempe dan susu, sedangkan biji kecil berwarna kuning untuk kecambah sayur dan tahu, dan kedelai biji kecil dan besar berwarna hitam untuk pembuatan kecap. Usaha meningkatkan produksi kedelai di Indonesia sering menemui hambatan, salah satunya adalah infeksi penyakit karat.

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is an important legume crop used as a major source of dietary protein for subsistence farmers and of foreign currency for Ethiopia. However, yields have remained low, thus threatening food security. The objectives of this study were to assess major threats to faba bean production, determine farmers' varietal preferences and selection criteria, and assess farmers' perceptions of faba bean diseases. Data were collected from 240 households through a survey and participatory rural appraisal methodology. Major threats to faba bean production were chocolate spot disease, which was a persistent problem in the Ethiopian highlands, and lack of improved seed. Many farmers (>85%) recognised symptoms of chocolate spot disease but had various names for it. Disease severity was associated with growing susceptible local landrace varieties which resulted in low yields (0.56 to 2.8 t ha -1 ). About 66.4% of the farmers preferred local landraces for their adaptability to the environment, tolerance to frost, early maturity, good food taste and straw yield, while improved varieties grown by 10% of the farmers were preferred for high grain yield and bigger grain size. Therefore, opportunities exist to improve the preferred landraces for yield and disease resistance through breeding.
