Background: To investigate the imaging findings of bladder paraganglioma (BPG) and improve the imaging recognition and diagnostic accuracy of the disease. Methods:The clinical and imaging data of 10 cases of BPG confirmed by operation and pathology were retrospectively analyzed from the aspects of tumor location, size and morphology, presence or absence of necrosis, cystic change and calcification, and enhancement methods.Results: Of the 10 cases, 7 cases underwent basal and contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan examination, 1 case underwent basal and contrast enhanced MRI scan examination, and 9 cases underwent ultrasonography examination; 5 cases were located in the right wall of bladder, 3 cases were located in the left wall, and 2 cases were located in the bottom wall; 2 cases showed necrosis, 1 case had cystic degeneration, and 2 cases had arcuate and semicircular calcification; both contrast enhanced CT and MRI examinations showed significant post-contrast enhancement; in 9 cases of ultrasonography examination, 5 cases had hypoechoic mass, 3 cases had moderate echoic mass, and 1 case had hyperechoic mass. Conclusions:The imaging findings of BPG have certain characteristics, and combining with clinical history is helpful for accurate preoperative diagnosis.

BACKGROUND Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder (PUB) is a nonepithelial tumor of the bladder that is also known as bladder pheochromocytoma. The incidence of nonfunctional paraganglioma of the urinary bladder is rare in clinical practice. CASE SUMMARY A case of nonfunctional paraganglioma of the urinary bladder diagnosed and treated in our hospital is reported herein. A 2.5 cm × 2.1 cm moderate-echo mass protruding into the right anterior wall of the bladder was incidentally found during transvaginal color Doppler ultrasound examination. Based on a contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the bladder, the right anterior wall of the bladder was considered to present a hemangioma. The patient underwent laparoscopic partial resection of the bladder wall in our hospital, and pathological results showed paraganglioma of the bladder. At present, we have followed up with the patient for half a year, and there has been no recurrence of the tumor. CONCLUSION The imaging patterns of PUB and bladder hemangioma are similar. In clinical practice, the possibility of PUB should be considered for a single wide-based isoechoic mass in the bladder, especially functional PUB may cause some adverse effects during surgery.

This case study concerns a 69-year-old woman qualified for transurethral resection of a primary tumor in a urinary bladder. Since a cystoscopic image did not correspond with typical urothelial carcinoma, an intraoperative ultrasonographic transrectal imaging was carried out, on the basis of which it was believed to be urinary bladder paraganglioma. Endoscopic treatment was abandoned. The patient was directed for further examination and next, on suspicion of extra-bladder phaeochromocytoma, scheduled for open surgery. Due to the location and range of the tumor, and systemic conditions, a radical cystectomy and Bricker’s supravesical ureteroileal conduit were carried out. A postoperative histopathological examination confirmed the phaeochromocytoma character of the urinary bladder tumor.
