Evaluation of Six Split-Thickness Skin Graft Donor Site Dressing Materials in a Swine Model

Abstract: plit-thickness skin grafting is a widely used reconstructive technique for the replacement of damaged or missing skin caused by burns, trauma, surgical resection for cancer, and chronic wounds. 1 Split-thickness autografts are harvested by excising the epidermis and part of the dermis, leaving a donor-site wound that can vary in thickness. 1 Donorsite wounds generally heal by reepithelialization in 7-14 days, after which they may be used repeatedly when a large defect necessitating repair exists, such as an ex… Show more

“…26,27 CMC-based hydrofiber dressing has been introduced as costly, more painful, and not easy to use compared with other split-thickness skin graft donor site dressings. 28,29 We have previously shown that NFC-based wound dressing is a promising material in clinical use for skin graft donor site treatment as it provides good attachment and adherence to the wound bed, and smooth automatic detachment after skin reepithelialization. 30 In this study, we aimed at evaluating more closely the effectiveness of NFC wound dressing in skin graft donor site treatment compared with a polylactide-based copolymer dressing, which we use as a standard treatment.…”

“…Use of split-thickness skin grafts (SSG) is common in plastic and reconstructive surgeries to cover a wide range of defects (1). This is mainly because of the availability of donor sites (2).…”

Donor-site wounds heal by re-epithelialization in 7-14 days, although the rate may be affected by the local wound environment (Argirova, Hadjiski, and Victorova, 2007 [1]; Demirtas , Yagmur , and Soylemez, 2010 [2]; Masella, Balent, Carlson, Lee, and Pierce ,2013) [3].…”
