Evaluation of Sinonasal Diseases by Computed Tomography

Abstract: CT is the modality of choice in imaging the sinonasal region for evaluating various congenital, inflammatory, benign and malignant pathologies and associated complications thereby planning the further management of the patient. CT is the best modality of choice for evaluating the bone erosion or destruction. The potential pitfalls to differentiate on CT are fungal sinusitis and dense secretions.

“…Computed tomography has become the method of choice in evaluation of paranasal sinuses. Radiation exposure, artefacts from metal, such as, dental work etc are the main limitations of paranasal sinus CT. CT is superior to MR in delineating the bony details and anatomical (5,6,7,8) variations.…”

“…Furthermore¸ because of the difficulty of interpretation anatomical structures on two-dimensional plane, development of threedimensional imaging techniques has accelerated. ın order to overcome of those above mentioned disadvantages and to obtain more accurate images of anatomical structures, CT is used for evaluating anatomic variations also with preoperative anatomical evaluations, pathologies and bone integrity as it supplies adequate spatial resolution (13,14). On the other hand, it is generally known that CT is liable for the majority of the medical radiation doses in the populations of modern societies.…”

“…Specifically, MRI can provide insight through better depiction of the anatomy of certain sinonasal sub-sites including the olfactory structures. It can aid in evaluating sinusitis, benign and malignant lesions, CSF leaks and pathology extending into sinonasal spaces (1,2,3).…”
