Evaluation of shear bond strength of zirconia to composite resin using different adhesive systems

Abstract: Background To evaluate shear bond strength of zirconia to composite resin using different universal and conventional adhesives and a zirconia primer. Material and Methods Forty zirconia blocks were fabricated of zirconium ingots (10×10×5 mm) and sintered at 1530°C for 2 hours. They were then air-abraded with Al2O3 particles. The specimens were divided into 4 groups and subjected to one of the following bonding agents: Futurabond U (group 1), Clearfil Universal Bond, uni… Show more

“…Therefore, differing from glass ceramics, acid-etching is not effective in preparing the surface for the adhesive cementation. At the same time, the absence of silica in its structure does not allow suitable direct bonding of composite resin [9,10]. With this intent, several surface conditioning methods are used such as selective etching, laser beam surface etching, grinding, air abrasion with alumina (aluminum oxide, Al 2 O 3 ) particles, tribochemical silica (SiO 2 ) coating, and application of adhesive/primer, or a combination of them [11].…”

“…[ 8 ] Also the zirconia–feldspathic veneer interface is one of the major weak points of these restorations, and in some cases, it results in fractures, exposing the underlying zirconia. [ 9 10 ]…”

“…Initially, air abrasion without a primer can result in high strength, but the strength of the bond decreases sharply even to zero over time. [ 9 ] In a study of different zirconia surface preparation methods, although the surface roughness was higher with the use of Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Nd: YAG) laser compared with other classes, air abrasion surface preparation yielded higher shear bond strength. [ 5 ] Before thermocycling, the pressure time and size of the air abrading particles had no significant effect on the bond strength; however, after thermocycling, they clearly resulted in the long-term bond strength.…”
