Evaluation of Serum miR-17-92 Cluster as Noninvasive Biomarkers for Bladder Cancer Diagnosis

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that the miR-17-92 cluster is involved in the occurrence and development of bladder cancer. However, the role of serum miR-17-92 cluster in the diagnosis of bladder cancer has not been studied. In the present study, we evaluated the expression of miR-17-92 cluster members in bladder cancer tissues by analyzing 428 cases from TCGA database. Next, we collected the sera of 74 bladder cancer patients and 90 controls, and used qRT-PCR to detect the relative expression of the cluster. The… Show more

“…The expression of miRNAs is closely related to the sensitivity of lung cancer radiotherapy [ 30 ]. miR-92a-3p is an essential member of the miR-17-92 cluster [ 31 ]. The miR-17-92 cluster is reported to have tumor suppressor or tumor-promoting roles in different types of tumors.…”

“…It consists of seven members: miR-17-5p, miR-17-3p, miR-18a, miR-19a, miR-20a, miR-19b, and miR-92. This cluster of miRNAs is aberrantly amplified in lymphomas and other malignancies 23 - 26 . Upregulation of this gene cluster promotes lymphangiogenesis, especially in B-cell lymphomas.…”

“…In a comprehensive study of using microarrays, a diagnostic combination of seven miRNAs showed an exceptional accuracy in distinguishing BC from noncancerous conditions and other tumor types; this combination used in BC patients with low-grade stage and < pT2 stage demonstrated a remarkable sensitivity (92.7% and 94.7%, respectively), surpassing the effectiveness of urine cytology as indicated by a significantly higher area under the curve (AUC) [39] . However, it should be noted that this combination fails to differentiate between NMBC and MIBC, which is crucial information for determining the necessity of cystectomy.…”
