Evaluation of Serum Ferritin, Procalcitonin, and C-Reactive Protein for the Prediction of Severity and Mortality in Hemorrhagic Fever With Renal Syndrome

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the clinical significance of serum ferritin, procalcitonin (PCT), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The demographical, clinical, and laboratory data of 373 patients with HFRS in northeastern China were retrospectively analyzed. The levels of serum ferritin and PCT in severe patients (n = 108) were significantly higher than those in mild patients (n = 265, p < 0.001) and associated with HFRS severity. The area under the… Show more

“…In metabolic syndrome, the serum ferritin levels were found to be positively related with the levels of insulin resistance, cholesterol, and triglyceride 30 . One recent study with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in China revealed that the value of serum ferritin for predicting mortality was comparatively good compared with procalcitonin and C-reactive protein 31 . For all-cause mortality risk within five-year in hemodialysis patients, serum ferritin > 1500 ng/ml was an early indicator 32 .…”

“…Another multicenter cohort study from 13 university hospitals in Korea included 142 patients with SFTS 27 . In addition, a study on SFTS conducted in Nanjing included 256 patients 13 . Notably, our hospital was one of the earliest hospitals to discover this emerging infectious disease 29 and has accumulated a large amount of experience in treating SFTS.…”

“…In this survey, 53.15% of patients with HFRS had normal white blood cell counts; therefore, white blood cell counts, platelet counts, and urine protein do not directly reflect whether a patient has HFRS, and the accuracy of laboratory indicators for HFRS can be affected by the presence of certain underlying diseases in patients. Studies have shown that the levels of procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in HFRS patients are significantly increased and are positively associated with the clinical severity of HFRS [ 27 , 28 ]. Therefore, the clinical diagnosis of HFRS combined with PCT and CRP results can improve the accuracy of diagnosis.…”
