The Italian Piedmontese cattle breed is traditionally housed in tie-stalls and, to a lesser extent, in loose housing systems with free stalls. The present study has compared the same group of 15 cattle before and after stable renovation (tie-stall vs free-stall housing) funded by Regulation (EU) No. 1305/2013. All the animals remained healthy during the trial, no clinical signs were observed and no mastitis occurred. The tested parameters were: locomotion scoring system, salivary cortisol, blood parameters, serum acute phase protein (albumin, haptoglobin, serum amyloid A and lysozyme). Samples were collected 3 times: before the change (T1), 3 days later (T2), 40 days later (T3). The change in housing determined noteworthy variations in the stress parameters: albumin and total protein displayed the lowest value at T2, while lysozyme displayed the lowest value at T3. Among the App, SAA and Hp were not affected by the sampling time. Salivary cortisol displayed the highest value at T1. This study suggests that tie-stall housing can endanger the welfare of animals, and it is hoped that this farming system will be abandoned in the future. ARTICLE HISTORY

The thyroid gland has some important endocrine hormones that regulate basal metabolism in various tissues of domestic animals. Thyroid hormones have a central role in animals' development and their tissue functions. In this study, the relationship between the plasma thyroxine (T 4 ), triiodothyronine (T 3 ), free thyroxine (fT 4 ), free triiodothyronine (fT 3 ), triglyceride, cholesterol, glucose, total protein, and albumin concentrations as well as albumin/globulin ratio in different ages of Iranian Sarabi calves was investigated. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein of 47 clinically healthy calves free from internal and external parasites (grouped according to their age-1-14 days, 1-2, and 3-6 months) in early of winter. The level of thyroid hormones was determined by chemiluminescence, and other parameters were measured by spectrophotometry using commercial kits. Our data from this study indicates that there was no significant difference and correlation in all the studied parameters between age groups and sexes. But we found a significant correlation between plasma T 4 and total protein (P<0.05, r=0.600), T 4 and albumin (P<0.05, r=0.575), T 3 and fT 3 (P<0.05, r= 0.610), T 3 and total protein (P<0.01, r=0.725), T 3 and glucose (P<0.01, r=0.685), and fT 4 and fT 3 (P<0.05, r= 0.609) concentrations as well as between total protein and albumin/globulin ratio (P<0.01, r=−0.783).

Alors que cela a été réalisé chez de nombreuses autres espèces de mammifères, chez le dromadaire, l’évaluation du taux de cortisol a été très rarement décrite dans les fèces, et elle ne l’a jamais été dans les poils. L’objectif de cette étude a ainsi été de déterminer, chez cet animal, les taux de cortisol dans le sérum, les poils et les fèces, et leurs éventuelles corrélations. Les résultats ont montré que le taux de cortisol variait avec la saison et qu’il était significativement (p < 0,05) plus élevé en janvier qu’en mai/juin. Une corrélation positive entre les taux sériques et ceux déterminés dans les poils et les fèces a été notée. Cette corrélation indique que l’analyse du cortisol dans les poils et les fèces reflète l’activité de la corticosurrénale et pourrait être utilisée comme une méthode non-invasive pour évaluer le stress chez le dromadaire.
