Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic and inflammation mucosal disease. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and oxidative stress damage might be the cause. Malondialdehyd (MDA), one parameter of lipid peroxidation is appropriate for DNA damage in OLP disease.Objective: To evaluate antioxidants and oxidative stress parameters in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) diseases and healthy control group with compare on serum and salivary samples. Material & Methods:The research population included 22 patients with OLP which recently diagnosed and 22 healthy controls matched for periodontal status. Total antioxidant activity (TAA), Malondialdehyde (MDA) or lipid peroxidation product and uric acid (UA) were evaluated in both serum and saliva. The t-tests were used for differences between the two groups in normal distributed variables and also Spearman's rho correlation coefficient for assessing association between serum and salivary fluids.Results: TAA levels in OLP patients showed significant result and lower than healthy control group (p=0.39). Also, results in the saliva MDA concentration, was significantly higher in OLP patients than controls. In correlation test, inverse and significant correlation was observed between the MDA and UA values(r=0. 682, P=0.0001) and a significant correlation was found between serum TAA and UA values. Conclusion:This study showed that OLP groups have higher cellular lipid peroxidation in compare to healthy controls and low level of TAA than controls. Patients with OLP are believed to be more at risk of antioxidant-oxidative stress imbalance.

Background The small signalling molecule nitric oxide (NO) has been postulated to have a mediator role in the pathogenesis of several diseases including oral lichen planus (OLP). This systematic review aimed to quantify the existing literature and assess the association of NO and OLP. Methods The focused question being addressed was “Is there an association between nitric oxide and OLP?” PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science, and grey literature from January 1990 to August 2018 were searched. Two independent reviewers performed the study selection using specified eligibility criteria. Results Seven studies that met the eligibility criteria were included. All of these were case‐control studies and 151 patients with OLP were evaluated (mostly females), with an age ranged from 20 to 75 years. The included studies showed a significant higher NO levels in OLP patients compared to the healthy controls, with two studies demonstrated a higher NO levels in erosive OLP compared to non‐erosive OLP. Conclusion These findings support that an association exists between higher NO concentration and OLP. However, larger high‐quality studies with refined methodological design are needed to confirm the role of NO in the aetiology and pathogenesis of OLP.

Aim:The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of mobile phone waves and Wi-Fi on electrolytes and oxidative stress indices of saliva. Materials and methods:A case group of 20 Wi-Fi and mobile phone users and a control group of 20 deaf people were selected. Saliva samples were obtained from both of these groups. Study variables, including the electrolytes and oxidative stress indices of saliva, were measured. The independent two-sample t-test was used to analyze the data. The statistical significance was defined at p < 0.05. Results:The mean sodium and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the case group were higher than in the control group. The results also showed that there was no significant difference between sodium and potassium levels (p = 0.163 and p = 0.892, respectively) and the oxidative stress of total antioxidant (TAO) and MDA (p = 0.138 and p = 0.115, respectively) in either of the two groups. However, there was a significant difference in salivary nitric oxide (NO) levels (p = 0.04) between the case and control groups. Conclusion:Electromagnetic waves affected the saliva composition to an extent that it caused a significant decrease in the NO levels of the case group.Clinical significance: Nitric oxide acts as an active radical in nonspecific defense mechanisms in the oral cavity. So, reduction of NO with mobile phone and Wi-Fi waves can cause disruption in the human defense system. These results illustrate the necessity of reducing contact with these waves.
