Evaluation of semen quality in 1808 university students, from Wuhan, Central China

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the semen quality of university students in Wuhan, the largest city in the world in terms of the number of university students. All student sperm donors recorded in the Hubei Province Human Sperm Bank from 1 March 2010 to 31 December 2013 were screened. At last, a total of 3616 semen samples from 1808 university student sperm donors were eligible and retrospectively analyzed. Each donor's semen parameters were averaged over two samples and compared with the World Health Or… Show more

“…These trends continued to be present even after adjusting for age, BMI, duration of abstinence, and season. Compared with other similar Chinese studies, 23 24 25 26 most values for the semen parameters examined in our study ( Table 2 ) were in the middle of the other reported results. The probable reasons for this include: (1) the different criteria used to select participants; (2) regional differences; and (3) the different study periods.…”

“…Recently, Rao et al . 23 reported that in 1808 Wuhan University students, there was a decrease in sperm concentration during the 4-year observation (from 58.0 × 10 6 ml −1 in 2010 to 41.8 × 10 6 ml −1 in 2013). After adjusting for potential confounders (age, year, season, and duration of abstinence), sperm concentration and total sperm count also showed a tendency to decrease.…”

“…Patients in S subgroup had a sperm concentration of 11.7 (2.1, 24.4) million/mL at the end of follow-up and was lower than that of healthy Chinese young men (50.0 [36.0, 63.8] million/mL) ( P < 0.001). 13 The sperm progressive motility (A + B) ([36.9% ± 20.2%] vs [52.6% ± 11.2%], P < 0.001) and total mobility (A + B + C) ([44.4% ± 21.9%] vs [58.6% ± 11.1%], P < 0.001) were significantly lower than that of healthy young men (n = 1808, age ranges 22–30 years). 13 According to WHO reference values for human semen, 14 36% (51/143) of our patients attained normal sperm concentrations (≥15 million/mL).…”

“…Çeşitli çalışmalar, cinsel perhiz süresi ile sperm motilitesi arasındaki ters korelasyonun gösterildiği benzer sonuçlar bildirmiştir. [7,10,14,15,17,20,[34][35][36] Bununla birlikte, bazı çalışmalarda cinsel perhiz süresi ile motilite arasında herhangi bir korelasyon gözlenmemiştir. [11,12,17,22] Bu konuda görüş birliği bulunmamaktadır.…”
