Evaluation of sealed vacuum extraction method (Seditainer) for measurement of erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

Abstract: Many variations of the ICSH selected method are used but comparability and quality control of the procedure remain poor. Several ESR methods also pose a biohazard risk. A new sealed ESR system (Seditainer) relies on direct vacuum extraction of the patient's blood into a sterilised tube ofsiliconised glass containing anticoagulant which itself forms the ESR tube and is disposable.5 As the specimen tube is not opened before disposal the biohazard risk to the phlebotomist and laboratory staff is reduced. “…An example of this is the manual Seditainer system, which shows excellent correlation with the Westergren method and is currently established in the eye casualty department for near-patient testing. 6,7 Recently, a number of new automated ESR methods have become available which offer results within 25 min of venepuncture, combined with the added benefit of reduced operator workload.s,9 These are available in both laboratory and near-patient formats.…”

“…The tubes used in the Seditainer ESR system have the advantage of wide diameter and the disadvantage of short length. 29 In our study, this disadvantage was most problematic in major inflammatory syndromes, with a decrease in the variation range of the highest Σ ESRs (Figure 3). The value of CRP variations in this situation is well established.…”

“…A major drawback, however, is the short length of the tube that decreases the analytical sensitivity of the analysis. This can be counteracted by improved As shown in Figure 2 and by Patton et al [7], the conversion of readings of the 100-mm ESR at 60 rnin cannot be transformed to Westergren values by a simple linear model. This would overestimate low values and underestimate high values.…”

“…In a recent evaluation [7] of the vacuum-tube system, Patton et al summarized that the method offers a simple and safe technique for measuring the ESR. The robust design of the sedimentation vacuum tube also invites to the production of instruments for automatic reading of the ESR.…”
