Increasing soil salinity due to global warming severely restricts crop growth and yield. To select and recommend salt-tolerant cultivars, extensive genotypic screening and examination of plants’ morpho-physiological responses to salt stress are required. In this study, 18 prescreened maize hybrid cultivars were examined at the early growth stage under a hydroponic system using multivariate analysis to demonstrate the genotypic and phenotypic variations of the selected cultivars under salt stress. The seedlings of all maize cultivars were evaluated with two salt levels: control (without NaCl) and salt stress (12 dS m−1 simulated with NaCl) for 28 d. A total of 18 morpho-physiological and ion accumulation traits were dissected using multivariate analysis, and salt tolerance index (STI) values of the examined traits were evaluated for grouping of cultivars into salt-tolerant and -sensitive groups. Salt stress significantly declined all measured traits except root–shoot ratio (RSR), while the cultivars responded differently. The cultivars were grouped into three clusters and the cultivars in Cluster-1 such as Prabhat, UniGreen NK41, Bisco 51, UniGreen UB100, Bharati 981 and Star Beej 7Star exhibited salt tolerance to a greater extent, accounting for higher STI in comparison to other cultivars grouped in Cluster-2 and Cluster-3. The high heritability (h2bs, >60%) and genetic advance (GAM, >20%) were recorded in 13 measured traits, indicating considerable genetic variations present in these traits. Therefore, using multivariate analysis based on the measured traits, six hybrid maize cultivars were selected as salt-tolerant and some traits such as Total Fresh Weight (TFW), Total Dry Weight (TDW), Total Na+, Total K+ contents and K+–Na+ Ratio could be effectively used for the selection criteria evaluating salt-tolerant maize genotypes at the early seedling stage.

Unpredictable rainfall in the tropics often increases the risk of waterlogging or even flooding in agricultural lands, hindering the efforts to fulfill maize demands. Breeding maize for waterlogging tolerance is necessary yet challenging since performing varietal testing on a set of hybrids might be biased toward the presence of genotype and environment interaction (GEI). This study aimed to elucidate the GEI effects on yield and related agronomic traits of tropical maize hybrids under normal irrigation and waterlogging conditions and to assess the adaptability of these hybrids in such conditions using several stability models. Ten hybrids including two commercial checks were evaluated across 14 environments under normal and waterlogging conditions in Indonesia from 2018 to 2020. Waterlogging imposed at the V6 stage for ten consecutive days significantly hampered the plant height and ear height, slightly delayed flowering dates, and reduced yield and yield components. The genotype, location, and genotype by location effects were significant on yield, but the genotype by waterlogging effect was not. Stress tolerance index is highly significantly correlated (p < 0.01) with yield in both normal (r = 0.90) and waterlogging (r = 0.96) conditions. The GGE biplot analysis on yield revealed five sectors, two mega-environments, and five vertex genotypes. This study indicated the possibility of breeding maize hybrids tolerant to waterlogging (G05), as well as high-yielding hybrids under both conditions (G07).

Nitrogen (N) deficiency in maize could cause a yield decrease than normal conditions. Yield reduction is one of the main concerns of plant breeders in stress conditions selection. This study aimed to identify the low N tolerant hybrid maize. This research was conducted at the IP2TP field station of the Indonesian Cereal Research Institute in Maros, South Sulawesi, from June to October 2021. The experiment was arranged in the study using a nested Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Replication was nested in the level of N fertilizer. Seventy-five maize genotypes and two levels of N fertilizer (N1=100 kg N ha−1 and N2=200 kg N ha−1) were used in this study. Each genotype was replicated two times at each fertilizer level. The variable observed was maize yield. Two tolerance indexes, such as the Stress Tolerant Index (STI) and Stress Susceptibility Index (SSI), were used to determine the maize’s tolerance to low N conditions. The results showed that the test hybrids showed tolerance level variations according to the SSI and STI indices. Seven hybrids were tolerant, and ten were susceptible based on two indices. Six hybrids were tolerant according to SSI but susceptible according to STI. Five hybrids were tolerant based on STI but susceptible based on SSI. Hybrid CML 465 x AVLN 109-3, AVLN 109-3 x VL1016518, CAL 1471 E x B 11, AVLN 86-4 X 1026-12, CML 465 x CAL 1473, VL1016518 x P7 and CML 161X CI 32 hybrids were tolerant maize based on SSI and STI indexes. These hybrids can be used as low N tolerant maize breeding materials in the next breeding program.
