Evaluation of safety and efficacy of variable pulsed light in the treatment of unwanted hair in 77 volunteers

Abstract: The VPL System presents as a relatively efficient and safe treatment alternative for long-term removal of unwanted hair. It seems to be particularly effective in fair-skinned patients with dark hair (skin types II-III-IV). Adverse effects were minimal and transient and, in no patient, significant enough to interrupt treatment.

“…The criteria by which we were able to identify optimal responders to this therapy suggest that darker SPT, black and medium thick hair predict better therapeutic long‐term outcome. Consistent with previous studies 8,9 , higher SPT (III and IV) and thicker hair 10 were associated with better treatment outcomes in our study. Patients with black hair also showed significantly greater hair reduction when compared with patients with brown hair.…”

“…A potential weakness of the study might be the use of semiquantitative assessment of hair reduction but it has been used so far successfully in many previous studies. 6,7 In order to check for consistency and reliability of the semi-quantitative assessment, we took a random sample of 32 digital images of eight study participants. In preselected squares (4 cm 2 ) on these images hairs were counted by a third blinded investigator.…”

“…Hair reduction was assessed by two dermatologists who were blinded as to which laser protocol was used. Hair reduction was graded into four categories depending on the percentage of lost hairs: 1, no response, <25%; 2, moderate, 25–50%; 3, good, 51–75%; 4, excellent, ≥76% …”

“…The IPL is normally used for skin treatment for which the spectroscopic characterization carried out lets us determine the effects of this wave length on the tissues. (Nahavandi et al, 2008) The filters used basically acted only as intensity attenuators and they let us determine which optic material is more convenient for the protection of the personnel that uses this type of IPL. It is because of this that we investigated the histopathological changes produced on an organ of the oral cavity of the chicken, the tongue and especially those centered in the cartilage, being similar to those described in prior publications produced in different organs of the embryo of chicken radiated with ultraviolet radiation, infrared and HeNe Lasers.…”
