Evaluation of Rubblized Pavement Sections in Michigan

Abstract: In 1987 the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) began using rubblization of portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement followed by the application of a hot-mix asphalt (HMA) overlay as a rehabilitation method for deteriorated PCC pavements. Early projects constructed in Michigan used the resonant frequency breaker to rubblize the PCC pavement, but by 1997 MDOT began to use the multi-head breaker (MHB) also. In 1999, because some rubblization projects needed rehabilitation after fewer than 12 years of ser… Show more

“…The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) explored alternatives to HMA overlays from a long-term performance point of view, including crack and seat and overlay, break and seat and overlay, and rubblization with overlay. NJDOT decided that there is sufficient positive experience on the national level (1)(2)(3)(4) to implement rubblization with HMA overlays as a means of rehabilitating some of the state's portland cement concrete pavements (PCCPs).…”

“…Rubblization has become very popular over the last 20 years in the United Stated. Many highway agencies in United States have reported their successful experiences on utilizing rubblization [LaForce, 2006, Wolters et al, 2007. Rubblization is an unique means of rehabilitating concrete pavements by in-place conversion of the old concrete pavement into a useable base that eliminate all reflective cracking concerns.…”
