Evaluation of robotic assistance in neurosurgical applications

Abstract: An analysis of usability aspects and accuracy for three different methods of neurosurgical intervention-stereotaxy, neuro-navigation, and robotic assistance-was accomplished in a detailed study including clinicians with different experience levels. Accuracy tests with a specially designed phantom were performed under clinical conditions according to EN ISO 9283. Test scenarios were designed according to a realistic clinical work-flow for the brain biopsy process. This paper presents the results of the accuracy… Show more

“…International organizations such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and other international organizations are making efforts to standardize medical robotics accuracy assessment (Howe & Matsuoka 1999; Zoppi & Khan 2010; Stiehl et al 2007; Haidegger et al 2010; Kroneif et al 2012). Yet, there are no widely accepted methods or regulations.…”

“…Traditional stereotactic surgery generally utilizes one head frame to implement positioning, which can cause pain and fear in patients; for uncooperative patients, the operations can be more cumbersome and difficult. In addition, surgical operations can be affected by the occlusion of the frame . The Remebot navigation and positioning system used in this study consists of one hexa‐degree‐free arm, one master computer, and one binocular camera, which does not require the use of the positioning frame; therefore, the operator can perform a precise operation and approach design assisted by the real‐time camera positioning.…”

“…• A robot work tool (3). The work tool of the robot consists of a mechanical interface (4), which makes it possible to connect the holder of the optical waveguide (5) to the flange surface of the robot (6). To be able to perform measurements, a reflector (7) of the laser tracker must be installed on the mechanical interface.…”
