Evaluation of Respiratory Protection Program in Petrochemical Industries: Application of Analytic Hierarchy Process

Abstract: BackgroundRespiratory protection equipment (RPE) is the last resort to control exposure to workplace air pollutants. A comprehensive respiratory protection program (RPP) ensures that RPE is selected, used, and cared properly. Therefore, RPP must be well integrated into the occupational health and safety requirements. In this study, we evaluated the implementation of RPP in Iranian petrochemical industries to identify the required solutions to improve the current status of respiratory protection.MethodsThis cro… Show more

“…The most important thing in the AHP is the functional hierarchy with the main input of human perception. With the hierarchy, a complex and unstructured problem can be solved into its group, then the groups are organized into a hierarchical form [19] [20]. AHP is a practical approach to solving complex decision problems that include alternative comparisons.…”

“…Because the AHP approach is competent to solve complicated decision-making problems with both subjective and objective evaluations methods, it has been so far applied in a wide range of decision problems, such as supplier selecting [6] [7], the human settlement [8], respiratory protection program [9], hospital site selection [10], measuring the sustainability of cities [11], etc. Owing to easy to use and simplicity, the AHP has been studied abundantly and widely applied in nearly all applications related to MCDM by integrating other methods such as quality function deployment (QFD), factor analysis (FA), fuzzy set theory, goal programming (GP), genetic algorithm (GA), and so on.…”

“…Taking into account different criteria, AHP calculates the weight and priority of decision variants. This method has been used in various studies in order to select the key performance indicators of the OHS-MS [12], determine the weight of the key performance indicators and sub-indicators of the safety management system [16,17], weigh the factors affecting musculoskeletal disorders (29), select key indicators for sustainable development [18,19], and many others [20,21]. Also, due to the fact that in AHP, weighing the variants is done by paired comparison of the variants with the target, and the variants are evaluated and scored through comparison with each criterion involved in the paired comparison, this method is efficient for the present study and the final results have higher accuracy and reliability.…”
