Evaluation of renal protective effects of the green-tea (EGCG) and red grape resveratrol: role of oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines

Abstract: Epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) and resveratrol (RSVL) are two of the most promising natural medicines. We verified their capacity to ameliorate cisplatin (CP)-induced disruption of renal glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in rats, and sought the mediatory involvement of lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde [MDA]-level) and inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α) therein. CP (10 mg kg⁻¹), a single i.p. dose, disrupted GFR (11-fold-rise in proteinuria, 2-5-fold rise in serum creatinine/urea levels) after 7 days, and killed … Show more

“…32 It has been also shown that EGCG can attenuate cigarette smoke-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis through the inhibition of mitochondrial dependent apoptotic pathway. 17 Renal tubular apoptosis plays an important role in CP-induced nephrotoxicity.…”

“…In 8 ovarian cancer cell lines, EGCG treatment led to an enhanced intracellular H 2 O 2 generation, suggesting that EGCG might accentuate oxidative stress to sensitize ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin (15). On the other hand, EGCG could protect the tissues and organs from nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and ototoxicity of cisplatin (16)(17)(18).…”

“…EGCG has been reported to have a preventive and treatment effects on several types of chronic diseases along with its anticancer effects [13,14]. As a study that reported about the inhibitory effect of EGCG on the toxicity of CP, El-Mowafy et al [15] reported about the preventive effect of renal damage by performing Intraperitoneal injection of EGCG for the prevention of renal damages that were caused by CP. Sahin et al [16] reported about that the injection of EGCG can reduce the oxidative renal damages and inflammative reactions that were caused by CP.…”
