“…The comparison of the quantitative RPR card and VDRL slide tests (Table II) showed that the former was more sensitive with the majority of sera. This finding was similar to that of Falcone, Stout, and Moore (1964). In the present study difficulty was sometimes found in reading the end-point in the RPR card test titration, as there was only a gradual change in the appearance of the flocculation through the dilutions.…”

“…1,5 The reasons for this are the limited sensitivity and disease specificity of the standard non-treponemal tests. The sensitivity of the macroscopic card tests, the modified version of the original rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test, the RPR circle card test 3,6 and the Toluidine red unheated serum test (TRUST), 1 cardiolipin, cholesterol and lecithin, 1,2,5 varies according to the stage of syphilis, 7 and might be negative in late latent syphilis. 7,8 With regard to disease specificity, reactivity in the non-treponemal tests may be unrelated to Treponema pallidum infection, a condition called a biological false-positive (BFP) syphilis test.…”

“…In the RPR test, the antigen suspension incorporates charcoal particles to enhance flocculation (9), while in the toluidine red unheatedserum test (TRUST), the carbon particles were replaced with toluidine red particles (10).…”
