Evaluation of Radical Scavenging Capacity of Polyphenols Found in Natural Malaysian Honeys by Voltammetric Techniques

Abstract: As minor constituents present in natural honey, polyphenols have the capacity as antioxidant by donating electron to halt detrimental actions of free radicals. The present work aims to analyze the electrochemical behaviour of polyphenols identified in Malaysian Apis and Trigona honey samples, determine and compare their reducing strengths as well as qualitatively evaluate the radical scavenging capacity of these phenolics in Malaysian honey samples. Six flavonoids, eight phenolic acids, and tannin pentagalloyl… Show more

“…Additionally, the peak at 1016 cm -1 observed in GA1 and GA2 samples refers to C-O stretching vibration of gallic acid where in an earlier study it was seen at 1026-1028 cm -1 (13,31). Therefore, the FTIR results confirm the presence of OH and C=O groups in all PM samples were contributed by NAR, GA, PEG and TPGS.…”

“…Gallic acid (GA) on the other hand, is a phenolic acid. Both NAR and GA are polyphenols that have been known to exert various biological properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and cardioprotective (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). The anticancer activity of NAR and GA was attributed to their capacity to induce cytotoxicity and apoptosis (15,17).…”

“…In addition, if the analyses are performed in the extracting media itself, possible interactions with the media could be probed since the electrochemical signal may be sensitive to specific solvation effects. [22][23] Thus, electrochemical determination of polyphenols contents or antioxidant capacity have proved to be efficient, even in complex matrices, including honey, 24 human urine, 25 , blood plasma, 26 or wine. 27 Surprisingly, there is no reported example of electrochemical analyses of polyphenols directly performed in DES.…”

“…Many researchers have studied the physicochemical properties of stingless bee honey, which aid in wound healing and are comparable to Apis mellifera honey properties. Stingless bee honey is a highly effective antioxidant [ 14 , 19 , 20 ], antibacterial [ 10 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ], and anti-inflammatory agent [ 10 , 20 , 25 ]. This honey also can act as a moisturizer for wounds [ 10 , 14 , 26 , 27 ].…”
