Evaluation of PSA-age volume score in predicting prostate cancer in Chinese population

Abstract: This study was performed to evaluate prostate-specific antigen-age volume (PSA-AV) scores in predicting prostate cancer (PCa) in a Chinese biopsy population. A total of 2355 men who underwent initial prostate biopsy from January 2006 to November 2015 in Huashan Hospital were recruited in the current study. The PSA-AV scores were calculated and assessed together with PSA and PSA density (PSAD) retrospectively. Among 2133 patients included in the analysis, 947 (44.4%) were diagnosed with PCa. The mean age, PSA, … Show more

“…For example, the detection rate was 25.3% among a Chinese cohort from Shanghai with a PSA level of 4.0–10.0 ng ml −1 and 36.5% among those with PSA level of 10.0–20.0 ng ml −1 22. Another study from Shanghai reported a detection rate of 26.2% in patients with PSA level of 2.0–20.0 ng ml −1 29. The detection rate in a Chinese cohort from Guangzhou with PSA level of 2.5–20.0 ng ml −1 was only 25.6% 30.…”

“…Furthermore, the prostate volume, based on MRI, could improve the effectiveness of tPSA for predicting PCa. [22,23] PSA–AV, incorporating age, prostate volume and serum tPSA, is a parameter to predict PCa, which was introduced by Patel et al [10] Wu YS et al [11] had tested the PSA–AV performance in predicting PCa and proved that it was an effective variable in diagnosing PCa, especially in young patients and those with small prostate volumes.…”

“…Furthermore, the role of PSA–AV in the Chinese population is proved preliminarily, especially in younger patients. [11] Therefore, this study investigates the ability of PSA–AV to detect PCa in the gray zone with PI-RADS v2 score 3 or serum tPSA 4 to 10 ng/mL.…”

“…Due to this phenomenon, the PSA-AV score was developed from the trio of tPSA, age and prostate volume. Studies have shown that PSA-AV score has better diagnostic performance than tPSA (Wu et al, 2018). damage exists equally in all stages of progression, independent of risk.…”
