Evaluation of Protective Effect of Different Doses of Terminalia arjuna Bark Ethanolic Extract on Cisplatin Induced Oxidative Nephrotoxicity in Rats

Abstract: Cisplatin (CP), a platinum compound, is one of the most active cytotoxic drugs used for cancer treatment. Nephrotoxicity is severe dose limiting side effect of this drug. Abnormal production of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) leading to oxidative stress has been implicated in kidney toxicity by Cisplatin. Here the study was aimed to evaluate nephroprotective effect of ethanolic extract of Terminalia arjuna bark (EETAB) at the doses (200 & 400 mg/kg, body weight) against Cisplatin (7.5 mg/kg, i.p) induced ne… Show more

“…Cisplatin has emerged as a panacea for treating all types of cancers [ 25 ]. However, exceeding the recommended dosage may lead to infrequent yet severe side effects such as hepatotoxicity [ 26 ]. Its use is associated with certain limitations, such as the potential for nausea, vomiting, electrolyte imbalances, hemolytic anemia, and neurotoxicity [ 27 ].…”

“…After seven consecutive days of oral alpha-tocopherol administration (100 mg/kg), mice in this group received a solitary intraperitoneal dose of cisplatin (10 mg/ kg) on the eighth day [19][20][21][22][23][24]. After a twenty-four-hour interval since the last administered dose, blood samples were collected from the mice, which were subsequently euthanized by cervical dislocation.…”
