Evaluation of prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers and their relationship with mattresses used in a general hospital intensive care unit

Abstract: This study evaluated the prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers (PU) and their relationship with mattresses (standard, foam, low-air-loss replacement) in an ICU. Ninety-five patients were randomized into three groups. The effect of the mattress was assessed by the presence of at least one PU of any stage and to the presence of at least one PU of stage 2 or higher. We evaluated the PU point prevalence, PU-free time, and PU incidence. At the first observation 35% of patients had at least one PU of any stage… Show more

“…In a review of the literature, various PU prevalence rates in ICU have been identified: 13.6% in a short stay ICU and 42.1% in a long stay ICU in the Netherlands [12], 28.7% in a national study of 850 patients in Dutch ICU's [13], 35% in a sample of 95 patients in an Italian ICU [14] and 56% in a sample of 85 patients in an ICU within the USA [15]. Incidence rates of 5.2e20% were recently reported in a published review of PU's in ICU patients [5,16] while an extensive and contemporary audit in the USA revealed one in seven ICU patients developing tissue damage [17].…”
