Evaluation of predicted loss of different land use and land cover (LULC) due to coastal erosion in Bangladesh

Abstract: Coastal erosion is one of the most significant environmental threats to coastal communities globally. In Bangladesh, coastal erosion is a regularly occurring and major destructive process, impacting both human and ecological systems at sea level. The Lower Meghna estuary, located in southern Bangladesh, is among the most vulnerable landscapes in the world to the impacts of coastal erosion. Erosion causes population displacement, loss of productive land area, loss of infrastructure and communication systems, an… Show more

“…In assessing land-use simulation accuracy, F1 score [73] and Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC) [74] offer distinct advantages that complement traditional accuracy metrics. The F1 score, a harmonic mean of precision and recall, provides a balanced measure of the model's performance, particularly in situations with uneven class distributions [73].…”

“…In assessing land-use simulation accuracy, F1 score [73] and Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC) [74] offer distinct advantages that complement traditional accuracy metrics. The F1 score, a harmonic mean of precision and recall, provides a balanced measure of the model's performance, particularly in situations with uneven class distributions [73]. It ensures that both the model's precision (how many selected instances are relevant) and recall (how many pertinent examples are chosen) are considered, thereby reducing the potential bias towards overrepresented classes.…”

“…Littoral transport, responsible for material removal and tidal processes, also plays a significant role. Shoreline and coastline stability is a worldwide threat that emerges because the mean sea levels rose 2 by 11-16cm in the last century and thus the coastal eroding became worse (Schwartz, 2005;Islam, et. al., 2023).…”
