“…In all the occasions, samples were collected 6 -7 h after the morning feeding of the animals. A drop of blood was placed on a strip, which was subsequently inserted into an automated reader (Precision Xceed Meter; Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL, USA), validated for measurement of β-hydroxybutyrate concentration in sheep blood (Panousis et al, 2012).…”

“…31,34 Method comparison studies utilizing ovine and caprine blood have identified proportional and constant biases for the meter relative to reference methods for BHB. [35][36][37] Complete characterization of the analytic performance of the meter, including identifying the linear range, would improve the clinical utility of the meter in measuring the BHB in blood from dairy cattle.…”

“…A first report using an electronic human BHB meter (MediSense Precision, Abbott, Abingdon, UK) for dairy cows described a high correlation (r 2 = 0.99) with BHB concentrations determined spectrophotometrically (the gold standard laboratory test) and considered the test to be suitable for detecting subclinical ketosis in dairy cows (Jeppesen et al, 2006). An electronic patient-side test for measuring whole-blood BHB concentration (Precision Xtra, Abbott Diabetes Care, Abingdon, UK) was recently validated for use in dairy cows (Iwersen et al, 2009;Mahrt et al, 2014) and sheep (Panousis et al, 2012). The main advantages of the Precision Xtra test include an immediate quantitative measurement with high sensitivity and specificity, without logistical efforts for laboratory analysis (e.g., cooling, centrifugation, or shipping).…”
