Evaluation of potential prebiotics: a review

Abstract: Prebiotics are any undigested food ingredients that are selectively fermented and allow for specific changes in the gut microbiota, thus improving the hosts' health. In order to assess the potential of a food component to be considered as a prebiotic ingredient, several in vitro and in vivo experimentations need to be performed to provide scientific substantiation. In vitro studies are widely used because they are faster, cheaper, and more ethical compared to in vivo studies. However, in vitro studies faced di… Show more

“…Fructans and galactans are examples of popular prebiotics with several research investigations highlighting their effect in enriching beneficial gut bacteria such as Lactobacillus and/or Bifidobacterium spp. (Bajury et al, 2017). With advances in microbiome research, our understanding of gut microbiota composition and substances that modify the microbiota has improved.…”

“…This may explain why in some cases the experiments may have failed in the identification of the most suited strains for a given target population. The use of fecal culture models, or intestinal simulators, has been also common in the search for prebiotics with microbiota modulating abilities ( Roberfroid et al, 2010 ; Shen et al, 2011 ; Bajury et al, 2018 ; Nogacka et al, 2020b ). However, such models have not been so extensively used in probiotics research.…”

“…Prebiotics are recognised for their ability to manipulate host microbiota to the benefit of the host (Gibson et al ., ). Currently fructans (Ahmad & Khalid, ; Bajury et al ., ; Joshi et al ., ), inulin (Ahmadi et al ., ; Fu et al ., ; Heydari et al ., ) and galactans (Cremon et al ., ; Fehlbaum et al ., ; Ndeh & Gilbert, ), fit this definition of prebiotics. Prebiotic products have a strong science background from positive clinical trials but have yet to obtain regulator‐approved health claims from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in Europe.…”
