Evaluation of possums sleep intervention: A pilot feasibility study

Abstract: The first year with a child is one of the most challenging times for mothers due to repeated awakenings typical for young infants. Research has shown that persistent fragmented sleep increases a mother’s risk for low overall well-being, which can challenge the mother-infant relationship. In an effort to improve sleep for both mother and infant, healthcare providers often recommend infant behavioral sleep interventions. “…The concepts of OBE advocated by William Spady emphasize that the focus of schools should shift from the teaching content to the students, that what students learn and whether they succeed is more important than when and how they learn, and that what students learn and how well they learn, and what they are able to do are important after all. Whereas the traditional curricula and teaching focus on the past, the outcome-based approach prepares students for the future and for the inevitable constant changes in the society [6]. “…An attachment-based program that aims to improve baby sleep and mother-baby interactions is referred to as "Possums" (Whittingham et al, 2020). Closson et al (2020) saw mothers of babies 0-6 months of age gather in a group setting with their babies to discuss and learn about alternatives to "cry it out," using an attachment and EA framework. In this pre/post design, although improvements in sleep could not be documented, mothers significantly improved in their relationships with the babies, as assessed with the EA-SR (mutual attunement, maternal hostility, child involve-ment).…”
