Rod-shaped TiO 2 nanocrystals (TiO 2 NRs), capped by oleic acid molecules (OLEA), were synthesized with controlled size, shape and surface chemistry by using colloidal routes. They were investigated for application as coating materials for preserving architectural stone of monumental and archaeological interest, in consideration of their self-cleaning and protection properties. For this purpose, two different deposition techniques, namely casting and dipping, were tested for the application of a nanocrystal dispersion on a defined stone type, as a relevant example of porous calcarenites, namely the Pietra Leccese, a building stone widely used in monuments and buildings of cultural and historic interest of the Apulia region (Italy). The physical properties of the stone surface were investigated before and after the treatment with the prepared nanostructured materials. In particular, colour, wettability, water transfer properties and stability of the coating were monitored as a function of time and of the application method. The self-cleaning properties of the TiO 2 NRs coated surfaces were tested under simulated and real solar irradiation. The obtained results were discussed in the light of the specific surface chemistry and morphology of TiO 2 NRs, demonstrating the effectiveness of TiO 2 NRs as an active component in formulations for stone protection.

Die Kolloidwissenschaft liefert grundlegende Erkenntnisse für z. B. die pharmazeutische Industrie oder die Wasch‐ und Reinigungsmittel‐, Farb‐ und Nahrungsmittelindustrie. Eine interessante Anwendung ist die Erhaltung von Kunstwerken, die wegen der komplexen Grenzflächenwechselwirkungen, die mit der Restaurierung von Artefakten verbunden sind, eine anspruchsvolle Aufgabe ist. Derzeit ist die Mehrzahl der wirksamsten und umweltverträglichsten Reinigungs‐ und Konsolidierungsmittel für Kunstwerke der weichen Materie und Kolloiden zuzuordnen. Die Entwicklung und Anwendung von immer komplexeren Systemen, von Mikroemulsionen bis zu semi‐interpenetrierenden Hydrogelen, die derartige Flüssigkeiten enthalten, werden in diesem Kurzaufsatz aufgezeigt. Diese Systeme wurden bei verschiedenen Artefakten eingesetzt: von Fresken der Renaissance bis zu Werken von Picasso und Pollock. Chemisches Design kann genutzt werden, um den Anforderungen von Konservatoren gerecht zu werden, und mit den Erkenntnissen zur Struktur und Dynamik von Kolloiden können zufällige Ansätze der herkömmlichen Konservierungspraxis überwunden werden. Außerdem werden die Perspektiven der Anwendung von Kolloiden und weicher Materie für die Erhaltung von Kulturerbe zusammengefasst.

The uniaxial compressive strength is an important parameter in selecting and design of rock and brittles structure. Protection of ancient monuments or historic structure has a great intense in material science point of view. Limestone is commonly rock material which has a great sense in historical buildings and temples. The strength of this material may be influenced by natural weathering like moisture, rains and varying temperature. Samples of ancient limestone rock are coated with Paraloid B44, Paraloid B72, ethyl silicate and Wacker OH100. The results concluded that both Wacker OH100 and Paraloid B44 coating material have more efficient and give considerable protection when the sample is immersed in salinity water for a week. The compressive strength of limestone decreases due to water action. Water absorption, porosity, and rock density are enhanced with the coating process.
