Evaluation of polymer modification in asphalt mixtures through digital image correlation and performance space diagrams

Abstract: Asphalt polymer modification has yielded improved mixture performance. Little research has been conducted to determine how SBS polymer affects mixture performance in interaction plots. Furthermore, research to date has not used digital image correlation to measure the fracture process zone (FPZ) size and its compression with crack propagation. Mixtures containing five distinct asphalt binders were tested at high and low temperatures. Findings demonstrated that the PG 70-28 mixture shifted optimally in terms of… Show more

“…Polymers are one kind of the widely adopted modifiers for asphalt, and much research has been carried out on the addition of various polymers into asphalt [5][6][7]. Due to the urgent need for waste recycling, crumb rubber as one early used modifier is widely used in asphalt to improve the performances of asphalt mixtures [8,9]. Nowadays, there are many of end-of-life tires in the world because of the rapid development of the vehicle industry.…”

“…In recent years, these methods have become major tools to inspect and characterize the mechanical response of such materials. The main full-field measurement methods that are used by the pavement community are the digital image correlation (DIC) [3][4][5] and more recently the grid method (GM) [6,7]. This last technique was used here because it exhibits a good compromise between spatial resolution and measurement resolution [8], which is crucial here, the material under investigation being highly heterogeneous.…”
